SHAMOKIN — A free nutritious lunch and swim courtesy of the Watsontown Police Department’s K-9 program made for a great combination for 100 children Thursday at the Lawton Shroyer Memorial Swimming Pool on North Rock Street.
Watsontown Sgt. Tim Kiefaber, a native of Shamokin, said the event was held to show the department’s appreciation for the support it has received from residents and businesses in the Shamokin area for the police K-9 unit.
Kiefaber is the handler for K-9 Mariska, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois, who was a big hit among the children, adults and pool staff in attendance.
Kiefaber and Mariska, a drug detection dog, have worked together for four years on many investigations in conjunction with the Northumberland-Montour Drug Task Force.
Kiefaber has been a police officer for 14 years, including the past seven with Watsontown.
He said the department donated $112 to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank that helps coordinate the free summer lunch program at the pool in Shamokin, held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. The program began June 20 and concludes Aug. 19.
Kiefaber said his department also donated $400 toward swimming passes that allows 100 children under the age of 18 to swim at the pool.
“Being from the Shamokin area, I know how important it is for children to get the proper nutrition,” Kiefaber said. “Sometimes, the meal they receive here at the pool is the only food the kids get to eat all day.”
Jeremy Pearson, programs coordinator for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank who also attended the event, stated, “Community engagement is always a great thing for us. Hunger is an uphill battle and we provide communities with whatever help we can to serve their needs.”
Pearson commended the pool staff for assisting with the free lunch program and supporting their patrons, especially the young children.
Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is based in Harrisburg and Pearson works out of the Williamsport office.
Shamokin Mayor Rick Ulrich praised the Watsontown Police Department for its generous donation.
Shamokin Administrator Robert Slaby added, “The free lunch program and free swims we have for the kids is a magnificent program and I’m very proud of the pool employees.”
Larry Strausser, longtime pool supervisor, said, “It’s a good program that’s much needed.”
Kiefaber said he’s been assisting Shamokin police and city officials in trying to establish their own K-9 unit, which he believes would be a great asset, especially with the department being short handed.
Ulrich said, “I strongly support establishing a K-9 program in Shamokin. It would be fantastic for the city and is long overdue.”
The mayor said Patrolwoman Alexis Temple would serve as the handler for the canine if a program is created.
