This week’s Take Me Home Tuesday is featuring Bortis, a four-year-old male dogue de Bordeaux, a large and powerful breed also known as a French mastiff.
Weighing about 52 kilograms, Bortis is an adult dog that is finished growing in height.
However, when it comes to weight, Alex Binns, of the Sudbury SPCA, said he came to the shelter a bit thin and he should weigh between 55 and 60 kg.
And he eats a lot, between 6-8 cups of food a day.
Being an old breed of dog, the Sudbury SPCA is looking for someone with previous mastiff experience who is ready to take on his guard dog-type behaviour.
"He can definitely be a big, goofy dog. I haven’t gotten him to play with toys yet, but he loves to just be around people," Binns said.
"He is more, I think a little bit higher energy than what people might expect from this type of breed, but generally, I think he’s honestly an amazing dog and no matter what, at the end of the day, once he figures out how to fit into the family, I’m sure he’ll be great."
The SPCA can give step-by-step instructions on how to properly introduce him to the house and what he’s going to need to prospective families.
Some things to consider before adopting a large dog are they often have a shorter lifespan than a smaller dog and they can come with some health issues, so between feeding and medical care, families should be prepared for the expense.
While the shelter can’t confirm if Bortis is a purebred dog, Binns said he looks like he could be and it is rare to get purebred animals at the shelter.
