There were smiling faces all round at the Exotic Pet Refuge in Deeping St James when there was a great turnout for its most recent open day.
Darren Mansfield who runs the refuge with his mum, Pam, said it was ‘very well needed’ given the current cost of living crisis, raising more than £5,000.
With more than 250 animals to house and feed, they’re extremely grateful for everyone who went along to show their support on Sunday.
“When I’m showing people around it’s nice to show them everything,” said Darren.
“Everyone always likes the monkeys and the spider monkeys because they’re always out and jumping around and shouting.”
The new caiman pen was finished for the last open day so that was open to more than 700 visitors on the day.
Darren said a good range of age groups went along with a lot of familiar faces and new visitors too.
He went on to explain how they had struggled during the pandemic as were unable to hold open days but had loyal patrons and visitors donating throughout.
The refuge costs between £65,000 and £75,000 a year to run, with an average £2,000 on electricity each month.
He expressed gratitude for the good people that avidly donate any food for the animals, adding: “It’s all through the kindness and generosity of our visitors as well as the loyal team of volunteers who help us to keep going.”
The next open day will be held on October 2. Over the last two years, the refuge has also held a Halloween show.
Darren added: “The Halloween evening has gone down well the last couple years, we put up decorations and it’s a chance to see the animals again before they hide in beds during the cold winter.”
