Just like humans, dogs have a lot of personality. Each breed — there are more than 300 of them — exhibits a combination of traits, like playful or energetic or sensitive. And with a growing number of dedicated doggo-clothing brands, why not dress a dog by its personality?
That’s what we did with these nine dogs. For the March issue of The New York Times for Kids, in your paper this Sunday, March 29 (and the last Sunday of every month), we talked to their owners and used descriptions from the American Kennel Club to figure out their temperaments. Then we brought them to a studio in Brooklyn and asked a stylist to dress each one in the best of canine fashion according to their inner doggies.
While The New York Times for Kids is normally only found in the print edition, we decided to share this article here because we all need a little fun right now.
Bear’s the dog “that wants to climb up on your shoulder and lick you,” his owner, James Oliverio, says. That combination of small stature and big feelings might be why Yorkshire Terriers are so popular in many American cities. Like most urbanites, they are brave, energetic and a little bossy.
Like most pugs, Bibi is incredibly charming and affectionate. “He’s a character,” says his owner, Annie Wasserman. “He’s so funny — he is like a comedian.” This combination of traits makes Bibi the perfect dog to rock this laid-back vintage look that includes a banana shirt from Dog & Co.
Dalmatians make for perfect preppies, because they have traditionally been companions for the aristocracy, beloved for their smart and outgoing nature. As a show dog, Kodak “gets to prance around and show off,” says his owner, Nicole Jenelle Forbes. But he can also be a “total goofball.”
Vizslas’ gentle and energetic temperament inspired the stylist Noemi Bonazzi to dress June in a “fashion-forward look.” But since clothes for larger dogs can be hard to find, it came down to mixing and matching the right pieces. In this case, June rocks a knit sweater and a faux-fur hat.
Miniature American shepherds, also known as mini Australian shepherds, are good-natured and intelligent. Hazel, who is wearing a leopard sweater from Ware of the Dog, is so brilliant, “it’s ridiculous,” says Lauren Blumenthal, her owner. And like the artsiest individuals, she is enthusiastic and motivated — though mostly by food.
Chaya’s owner, Annie Wasserman, describes her as a sports queen and says “she’s very friendly and outgoing and loves to eat and play.” French bulldogs are smart, playful and always alert — making Chaya perfectly suited for casual athletic wear.
Rosie, like most Daschunds, is naturally friendly, curious and full of spunk. So for her look, Bonazzi wanted something “very sweet” that said “you can always be a girl at heart” and chose items that were fun, but casual: a dress and sunglasses.
Koko comes from a historically sophisticated breed, the Saluki. To showcase her sensitive and dignified nature, our stylist chose a coat by a Milanese brand: “I thought this would be perfect, because it is very elegant,” Bonazzi says.
With his spiky hair, Pepe’s appearance alone gives him a punk attitude. But as a Chinese crested dog, he has the temperament to match too — alert, lively and full of feistiness. “He’s got a lot of attitude — he thinks he’s a 100-pound dog in a 10-pound body,” says his owner, Christina Potter.
