A novel program in East Texas is giving dogs and inmates a second chance. PAWsitive Change pairs prison inmates with stray dogs suffering from severe trauma and behavioral issues.  The program aims to rehabilitate inmates while preparing the dogs for adoption.
To be considered, inmates must apply to the program. The process is intensive and includes an essay and video interview. If accepted, they are paired with an at-risk dog. Afterward, inmates and dogs both go through a four-week series of team-based exercises.

KETK reports that the program helps inmates “engage in positive team settings and become aware of the needs of others.” According to officials, inmates gain an increased sense of “self-esteem and social connection.”
Meanwhile, the dogs become more trusting of humans. The group’s website states that dogs feel “decreased symptoms of nervousness, insecurity, and fear, as well as increased obedience to handlers.”
The program comes as more dogs are overwhelming rescue shelters. Charissa Pool, a director for the Henderson Animal Center, spoke to CBS 19 about the dilemma:
“It’s bad. The last several years dealing with a less than optimal pandemic situation, and you know, people are losing their jobs. Their health is declining [and] the economic situation as well all play into what people have to offer these pets.”
After completing the program, the search begins to find new ‘fur-ever’ homes for the dogs.
The program is giving dogs another chance to join new families. Besides that, inmates are benefiting from the time spent with the pups. Dogs are great forms of therapy for those suffering from stress and trauma, whether it’s people who are incarcerated or first responders.
And of course, creating a way to help adopt more dogs is a win for all.
