Southern Tier COVID Incidents Increase – Binghamton – wnbf.com
As new reports emerge about the appearance of Monkeypox outside of New York City, there is still concern about the other virus still circulating and mutating.
On the COVID-19 front, Broome County continues to see the number of people hospitalized to slowly grow.
As of Friday, July 29, 59 people were hospitalized with COVID in Broome with 253 new cases over the previous five days. Broome County’s total number of cases since the start of the pandemic in March 2020 now stands at 62,146 with 45 new cases announced on Friday morning (July 29). There have been 535 deaths attributed to the pandemic in Broome County.
Chenango County’s weekly Wastewater Surveillance Report showed a slight increase in SARS CoV2 levels over the past two weeks, prompting the Health Department to remind residents that the virus is till circulating.
In a statement issued by the Chenango County Department of Health last week, officials say although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to list Chenango County’s transmission risk level as “LOW”, they are continuing to monitor the trends closely.
While officials in the county have not announced any actions in response to the wastewater testing, the statement points out: “There are many counties downstate that are experiencing an increase in COVID-19 cases. Some are recommending more personal protective measures and prevention strategies.”
Health officials say there is a misconception that people can’t get COVID if they have been fully vaccinated and/or boosted, a notion that was proven wrong by President Biden testing positive for COVID and again being isolated after testing positive again after being cleared from last month’s first positive result.
Experts say it is still important to be vaccinated and boosted but also stay home if you are sick and take caution with people at risk like the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.
The Broome County Health Department will hold a Pfizer Booster Clinic and Pfizer Pediatric Booster Clinic at the National Night Out event at Cheri Lindsey Park on August 2 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
