SAN ANTONIO — Blankets, towels, and food. Those are just some of the items needed at an animal shelter as we head into the winter months.
The San Antonio Humane Society is asking for donations to keep the cats and dogs nice and warm this year. That way they’ll be better prepared in case we have severe winter weather like we did last winter.
Mike Wilson spends time with nine-year-old senior dog Colin every day he’s at this shelter.
“He’s my pet pal so we’re pretty close,” said Wilson.
Mike’s the lead volunteer at the San Antonio Humane Society. He said he’s doing as much as he can right now to make sure Colin and the other animals here will be warm in case there’s another winter storm.
“It’s a not a frequent experience at all in San Antonio, but I think we learned a lot,” said Wilson.
During the winter storm, they experienced broken water lines at the shelter as well as power outages. They had a limited amount of staff come in to check on the furry friends.
“I feel like with that experience, we learned a lot. We learned what we need and how to make the best use out of all the donations we received. So you help make that difference. You help us provide the best care that we can,” said Luci Almanza with the Humane Society.
Luci Almanza says the pets are like their own.
“We’ll come in the morning. We’ll see who’s here, who needs that extra promotion on social media,” said Almanza.
They become very close to them and need donations to prepare for the cold winter days that are coming quickly.
“We have a blue bin located just outside of our shelter doors and it’s available there from noon to seven,” said Almanza.
Almanza checks to see what’s already been dropped off.
“We always use the blankets, the towels. All of that comes in handy. We definitely made the best use of all the beds and all the sweaters and all of that to keep them warm and cozy during those days.”
The San Antonio Humane Society accepts donations every day from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m Intake of new animals is done every Monday. Starting Monday Dec. 6, all pets will be up for adoption for only $25, as part of a Clear the Shelter special.
“Little Smarty. She’s our longest kitty resident right now,” said Almanza.
For Smarty and the other cats and kittens, blankets are a blessing.
“We accept pet beds kind of like this where they can stay comfortable and cozy,” said Almanza.
Almanza said they’re hoping nothing likes the winter storm happens this winter, but if it does, the Humane Society says it is better prepared, thanks to the donations given by the community.
