Perth weather: ‘Once-in-a-year storm event’ prompts RSPCA pet warning – PerthNow

With Perth in the grips of being clobbered by the first in a series of strong winter cold fronts, pet owners are urged to make sure their animals are safe and comfortable amid the chaos.
Two powerful cold fronts brought damaging winds and heavy rain to WA from early Monday morning, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting the raging gales to continue into the week with the potential to impact trees and vegetation, as well as to homes and property.
Surfers have been are told to give the waves a miss with BOM issuing severe weather warnings for damaging surf conditions.

The severe weather is set to continue through the week, with a second system buffeting the State likely to prolong the conditions through to Friday.
But while West Australians are advised to batten down the hatches at home, RSPCA is urging West Australians not to forget to give all creatures great and small get an extra hit of TLC throughout the tempest.
RSPCA WA Shelter Manager Emily Smith said, while some animals coped better during winter weather, they still required extra attention and care at this time of year.
“The winter months can put pets at risk, but luckily there are simple steps we can take to prepare, and make sure our animals stay warm and protected from the wind, rain and cold,” she said.
“Cold and wet weather conditions bring a new influx of cruelty reports to our Inspectorate.
“Last winter, RSPCA WA received over 1500 reports, with common issues being insufficient food, water and shelter, abandonment, and animals in need of vet treatment.
“Protecting your pet this winter could be as simple as providing some extra bedding, food, and somewhere warm and dry for them to escape.”
