Pasco extends its suspension of dog adoption and other services – Tampa Bay Times

LAND O’ LAKES — Pasco County Animal Services is continuing its suspension of dog adoptions, intakes, surgeries and rescue transfers for another 14 days because of the highly-contagious canine pneumovirus, officials announced Friday.
The shelter closed to such services two weeks ago but the problem has not yet cleared. Officials hope that they can resume regular operations in mid-November once they determine that the environment is safe for pets.
The virus causes respiratory disease in dogs and is difficult to control in kennels. Shelter officials believe it is present in the community and urges dog owners to watch for symptoms such as sneezing, watery eyes, running nose and coughing. Owners should contact their veterinarian if those are present.
“The health and safety of the animals in our care, as well as people and pets in our community, is and will always be our top priority,” said Animal Services Director Mike Shumate. “We realize this suspension of services is an inconvenience for our customers, and we appreciate your understanding.”
The shelter is continuing it ongoing testing, supportive care and contact with recent adopters and rescue groups.
The suspension does not affect cat services and adoptions, surgeries and rescue transfers. Vaccine and microchip clinics are still operating.
