My dog could get more 'historic' money from Washington – The Ely Times

My dog could get more 'historic' money from Washington – The Ely Times

Properly Subversive/Sherman R. Frederick
Our senators from Nevada want you to know that they have snagged pork from Washington to improve our lives in Nevada.
I know this because I get their press releases.
Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto says she’s gotten us a $1.2 million grant – yes, kids, $1.2 million – to train more mental health professionals in Nevada schools.
“Investing in our kids’ mental health has always been one of my top priorities, and I secured historic funding to increase the number of mental health professionals in schools across Nevada,” she said.
And our other senator – Jacky Rosen – sends us at Battle Born Media a press release about how she’s been instrumental in getting us $55.2 million for “reliable, affordable broadband infrastructure and other digital connectivity technology projects, which will help connect more than 40,000 (low income) households in Nevada to high-speed internet.”
Can’t wait for that little spinning wheel of death to disappear from computers in Ely, Eureka and Hawthorne. Waiting …
Of course, as thinking Nevadans know, this is a form of political cow-splat. Money from Washington gushes to the hinterlands at an alarming rate. Even Ukraine is snagging some of the spillage.  (If only Putin would threaten Mesquite, we’d be rolling in dough.)
Look, all I’m sayin’ is Nevada senators calling their efforts “historic” gilds the lily.
Hell, if my dog Gidget were a U.S. Senator she could get twice as much as Cortez Masto and Rosen by taking the Senate floor and doing what she does each morning before breakfast – bark incessantly.
There’d be bipartisan support, I’m telling you, to “give the dog from Nevada” whatever she wants … just please make Gidget shut up!
Of course, I’m exaggerating. But a Nevadan can dream, can’t he.
SPEAKING OF SPENDING
While I’m in the neighborhood of Washington spending, I’m reminded of a Thomas Sowell quote that asked: “Why have a national debt ceiling if it doesn’t really put a ceiling on the national debt?”
The answer, of course, is we really don’t want to cut spending, we only want to look like we’re cutting spending. That pretty much goes for Ds and Rs.
STRAIGHT-UP SUSPICIOUS
Even though it has political overtones (let’s be honest about that), there are legit reasons for Congress to want to know more about the sales of five pieces of art by Hunter Biden. The buyers are anonymous (what could go wrong?) and the prices were, well, extraordinary. Five Hunter Biden paintings went for $375,000.
Nice work for a first-time painter if you can get it.
This has “influence peddling” written all over it. The people have an interest in knowing who the buyers were and where’d the money go.
ONE MORE THING
– Europeans: I drove 45 minutes to spend the weekend in Spain then stopped in France and Italy to visit friends on the way home. Nevadans: I was in Reno and drove east for 8 hours. I was still in Nevada.
– The true measure of strength is to open a box of thin mints without eating a whole sleeve.
– I am so tired of living like it’s the 1600s. Can I afford eggs at the market? Are my friends gonna die in the plague? Puritans coming for my sinful lifestyle? I want some modern problems.
Thanks for stopping by and for reading a Battle Born Media newspaper. As always, avoid soreheads, laugh a little, and question authority.
