COLUMBUS, Ohio — Multiple animals are dead after a fire broke out at an east Columbus home Sunday afternoon, according to the Columbus Division of Fire.
Firefighters responded to a call of a house fire on the 600 block of Lilley Avenue, just east of Kelton Avenue, at approximately 2:30 p.m. A neighboring home was also burned in the fire.
At least two dog and multiple cats died in the fire, according to Fire Battalion Chief Mike Windon.
10TV spoke with Leon Mennifield, whose home was burned by the fire.
“I lost my home…I don’t even know how to feel,” said Mennifield.
He said he, nor his wife or kids were inside the home when it started.
Mennifield said his family lost several pets. “I had a shepherd, Lala, I had her for three or four years,” he said. “My Shih Tzu just gave birth to three babies yesterday.”
He’s not certain about what’s next for his family, but knows whatever it is, they’ll handle it together.
“We lost…lost a lot. All that can possibly be regained… but it still like hurts,” said Mennifield.
Windon said it’s unclear where the fire originated or what caused it. No one was was injured.
