Jill Schramm/MDN Kara Kline, director of nursing at Edgewood, and her mother, Barb Thompson, an Edgewood resident, enjoy time together with their puppy, Chewy.
There’s always been a special bond between Barb Thompson and her daughter, Kara Kline.
Kline holds a unique place in her mother’s heart as the daughter she longed for after having five sons, but those ties have been strengthened this year.
Thompson moved in January from the state of Michigan to Edgewood, where Kline works as the director of nursing. It has given them the opportunity to grow even closer as they enjoy Tuesday poker games, dining out regularly at Five Guys and get-togethers at Kline’s home a few times a week.
“We have a lot of fun together,” Kline said. “It’s been very joyous, and it’s been very joyous to see her come out of a shell that she’s been in for 13 years.”
Kline said her mother was declining with the isolation that followed the death of her husband 13 years ago. When her mother faced health issues that needed attention, Kline persuaded Thompson to move to Edgewood for rehabilitation and medical testing.
“We had the therapy. We had everything that she needed. The family was all on board, and she’s been thriving ever since,” Kline said.
Kline acquired a puppy, Chewy, as a Christmas gift for her mother, whose dog had recently died. Chewy lives with Kline’s family, spending his days visiting Edgewood residents and hanging out with Thompson at the assisted-living facility when Kline is there.
Thompson said she was comfortable in moving to North Dakota, having visited the state a number of times to see her daughter and four grandsons.
“I love my daughter so it didn’t bother me,” she said of the move.
Kline has lived in Minot for 18 years, coming to the area through her husband’s connection at the time with the U.S. Air Force. She obtained her nursing degree from Minot State University and worked in an intensive care unit before joining Edgewood five years ago, initially as assistant director of nursing.
The youngest of six children, Kline is one of three of Thompson’s children who entered the medical field, including one who is a physician. Another is a priest.
Kline said she had a wonderful childhood with a father who was fun-loving and a mother who was a fabulous cook. Both parents were very faith-driven and involved in their children’s lives, she said.
That upbringing influences the way she approaches motherhood as she seeks to create an environment of love and communication in her home, she said.
Thompson has seven grandsons and a granddaughter. Watching her grandsons in Minot play hockey or backyard soccer has been a bonus to spending time with her daughter. Thompson plans to join the family Sunday for a Mother’s Day dinner.
