A man was found dead Monday night, Jan. 9, in a structure fire near Turtle Lake.
The Turtle Lake Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at 1285 2nd Street (Hwy. KK) just before 6 p.m. after a person called 911 reporting that their neighbors’ house was on fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke coming from a pole shed, which also included living quarters on one end of the building.
Prior to firefighters arrival, a woman had escaped the building and went to a neighbor to call for help, but a man and two dogs were still inside.
Firefighters initially entered the building, but had to exit due to extreme heat and heavy smoke inside.
Police searched the area around the building for the missing person.
About an hour after arriving on scene the man was found deceased in the living area near a window. One pet was also found deceased.
The woman, wife of the victim, who escaped the fire was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and released.
The name of the victim was not released as of press time Tuesday, Jan. 11, pending notification of family.
Firefighters remained on scene until 10:10 p.m. Monday.
The fire remains under investigation by the Turtle Lake Fire Department, Barron County Sheriff’s Department, a Rusk County Sheriff’s Department Certified Fire Investigator and the Barron County Medical Examiner’s Office.
