Uvalde’s top school official has recommended the firing of the school district police chief who was central to the botched law enforcement response to the shooting at an elementary school that killed two teachers and 19 students. The Uvalde school board is set to hold a special meeting Saturday to consider the superintendent’s recommendation to fire police Chief Pete Arrendondo. The announcement comes amid massive public pressure. Arrendondo has been accused by state officials of making several critical mistakes during the May 24 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is one of two finalists in the race to replace Boris Johnson as Britain’s prime minister. If Truss wins, she will be Britain’s third female prime minister, and she has forged her image in homage to the first, Margaret Thatcher. Truss has been front and center in Britain’s support for Ukraine and Western sanctions against Russia. She has also stoked a feud with the European Union over post-Brexit trade arrangements. Her pugnacious approach and promise to cut taxes have have made her the favorite of the Conservative Party’s euroskeptic right wing. Critics argue that Truss lacks the gravitas to lead the country amid economic turbulence and a European war.

A jury in Florida has found Tesla just 1% negligent for disabling a speed limiter on an electric car involved in a fiery crash that killed two teens. Tuesday’s verdict places 90% of the blame on the 18-year-old driver. Barret Riley and his friend were killed just as they were set to graduate from high school. Jurors also found the teen’s father 9% responsible for enabling what Tesla called a history of speeding and reckless driving. The verdict awards $6 million in damages to the boy’s mother and $4.5 million to his father.
Former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak is one of two finalists in the race to replace Boris Johnson as Britain’s prime minister. Sunak was seen as Johnson’s natural heir, until he turned on the prime minister and quit this month after questioning Johnson’s competence and ethics. Now he faces fierce opposition from Johnson and his allies, who consider him a turncoat. At 42, Sunak would be the youngest prime minister for more than 200 years and the country’s first South Asian leader. The former investment banker won many fans with his support for people and businesses during the coronavirus pandemic, but his slick demeanor and personal wealth could count against him in the contest. He faces a runoff with Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.
The U.S. Postal Service plans to further increase the number of electric-powered vehicles it is buying to replace its aging fleet of delivery trucks. The Postal Service anticipates boosting electric vehicles from 20% to 50% of its initial purchase of 50,000 vehicles in a new environmental filing. It also proposes buying more than 34,000 commercially available vehicles over two years. The proposed changes are to be posted in the Federal Register on Thursday. They follow lawsuits by 16 states seeking to halt purchases under the initial proposal that called for a greater number of gas-powered trucks.

Developers in rural Utah who want to create big underground caverns to store hydrogen fuel won approval for a $504 million federal loan this spring. They plan to convert the site of a 40-year-old coal plant to cleanly-made hydrogen by 2045. The seasonal storage project is one of of several undertakings that could help determine how big a role hydrogen will play in providing reliable, carbon-free energy in the future. In Utah, it’s won support across the political spectrum. Officials hope efforts to transition the power plant to cleanly-made hydrogen could offset job loss in the declining coal industry.

Libya’s National Oil Corporation says it resumed oil exports, ending a monthslong hiatus. It says a Malta-flagged tanker, Matala, docked Wednesday at the al-Sidra terminal to ship one million barrels of crude oil. Two other tankers were scheduled to ship 1.6 million barrels from the terminals of Zueitina Ras Lanuf. The resumption of oil export has come after one of the country’s rival governments fired the chairman of the state-run oil corporation. Libya’s prized light crude has long been a feature of Libya’s conflict, with rival militias and foreign powers jostling for control of Africa’s largest oil reserves.
In 2018, the FDA began investigating whether the increasing popularity of grain-free dog foods had led to a sudden rise in a potentially fatal heart disease in dogs. Four years later, the FDA has reached no conclusion, but the publicity surrounding the issue has shrunk the once-promising market for grain-free dog foods.  A six-month investigation has found that a tangled web of industry funding and interests influenced the origin, data collection, and course of the FDA study. Makers of grain-free dog foods and their suppliers, in turn, have exerted pressure on the FDA to protect their market share.
Iraqi Kurdish officials and Iraq’s milistary say eight tourists have been killed and over 20 wounded after Turkish airstrikes struck northern Iraq. The Wednesday attack hit a resort area in the northern semi-autonomous Kurdish region. All casualties in the attack were Iraqis. Turkey regularly carries out airstrikes into northern Iraq and has sent commandos to support its offensives targeting elements of the outlawed Kurdistan Worker’s Party or PKK. Wednesday’s attack marked the first time that tourists had been killed in the frequent attacks by Turkey in the area, the officials said. Ankara has pressed Baghdad to root out PKK elements from the northern region.

French President Emmanuel Macron says that a new spiral of violence between Israel and the Palestinians “can start at any moment.” Speaking alongside the Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in the presidential palace in Paris, Macron called for a resumption of peace talks that broke down more than a decade ago. The quest for dialogue cannot be abandoned, Macron said on Wednesday. He called for an end to the expansion of Jewish settlements in the Israel-occupied West Bank and a stop to evictions of Palestinian families from their homes in East Jerusalem.

Sales of previously occupied U.S. homes slowed for the fifth consecutive month in June as higher mortgage rates and rising prices kept many home hunters on the sidelines. The National Association of Realtors said Wednesday that existing home sales fell 5.4% last month from May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.12 million. That’s lower than what economists were expecting, according to FactSet. Sales fell 14.2% from June last year. Sales have now fallen to the slowest pace since June 2020, near the start of the pandemic. Excluding the pandemic slowdown, sales in June were running at the slowest pace since January 2019. The national median home price jumped 13.4% in June from a year earlier to $416,000.

The death of a street cleaner during a heat wave in Madrid is driving a debate in Spain about the need to adapt labor rules to the realities of climate change. Most importantly, officials and unions are trying to ease the heat inequalities faced by lower-earning workers and families. When street cleaner José Antonio González started his afternoon shift in Madrid, the temperature was 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). Three hours later, the 60-year-old collapsed with heat stroke and died. In Spain, activists are pressing for work hour changes during heat waves, while in Britain, unions want the government to set maximum heat standards for indoor workers.

Britain’s government has given the green light to a new nuclear power station that’s expected to generate enough low-carbon electricity to power 6 million homes. Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said development consent was granted for the building of the plant, called Sizewell C, on eastern England’s Suffolk coast. French energy company EDF, which will partly fund the project, has said the plant will generate electricity for at least 60 years and will employ 900 people. The plant will reportedly cost 20 billion pounds ($24 billion). Authorities say the plant will make a substantial contribution toward Britain’s target of making up to a quarter of the power consumed in the country come from nuclear by 2050.

Shell-shocked family pets started roaming around Ukraine’s capital with nowhere to go in the opening stages of Russia’s war. Volunteers opened a shelter to take them in and try to find them new homes or at least some human companionship. Every day, Kyiv residents come to visit cats and dogs evacuated from cities on the frontlines or left without owners because of the nearly five-month war. A woman who brings her 12-year-old daughter to walk rescued dogs three to four times a week says many of the animals arrive with lost paws or other serious injuries.
