PERINTON, N.Y. — Lollypop Farm says it has rescued nearly 800 animals with their babies after reports of improper care by a local pet exhibitor.
Officials say the animals were housed in a building with high levels of ammonia and that lacked food and water.
The rabbits, guinea pigs, mice and rats are now under the care of the Humane Society of Greater Rochester.
The sudden influx of animals is the result of the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation investigation of a Walworth pet exhibitor.
Investigators found World of Wildlife Educational Encounters in violation of unlawful possession of wildlife and dangerous wildlife.
They say the animals were housed in a building with high levels of ammonia– and lacked food and water. Nine exotic animals were also seized and the remaining were relocated.
"These animals require special food, it’s not like dogs and cats where we have plenty of that," said Reno DiDomenico, vice president of law enforcement for Lollypop Farm. "We need bedding, we need hay, food for the animals, particularly the rabbits, they need greenery. We have set up something with Wegman’s so if you can get us Wegman’s gift cards so we can get to Wegman’s and get lettuce and carrots and stuff for the rabbits."
This is case is ongoing as they check out each animal’s well-being, but humane society officials say the person originally housing these animals is looking to upgrade the facility.
Lollypop says in addition to food and hay, it needs towels, sheets, tissue boxes and toilet paper tubes.
