Tammy Sader won the Electric City 600 Club Tournament last weekend at Sportsman’s Bowl and has been a consistent competitor in area scratch leagues for 20 years.
Smooth-rolling Tammy Bidwell Sader is not comfortable being the center of attention, but her consistent bowling performances over the last two decades have elevated the 49-year-old Rotterdam resident into the top tier of area keglers.
Sader strives for perfection in her game, and although she’s low-key in terms of her personality, she is extremely tough on herself. She loves matching her talents against the best scratch players in the region and doesn’t get intimidated.
The MVP Health Care employee currently bowls in just one league – averaging 223 in the Sportsman’s Majors Monday night at Sportsman’s Bowl, but she previously competed in at least two leagues per week, averaging mostly in the 220s for the last 20 years.
Sader once averaged as high as 233 for part of a season in the Boulevard Summer NFL league and registered a 229 for 124 games in the DV Greco Insurance Women’s Doubles league in the 2011-12 season.
She previously bowled with her husband, David, and her daughter, Natasha Fazzone, in the Vitalo Classic, and competed for several years in the Capital District All Star League at Sportsman’s Bowl. The City Catholic League, the Newkirk Keglers and the Atomic are also on her resume.
“I’m only bowling once a week now,” Sader noted, “I was bowling with David and Natasha on Saturdays, but David’s work schedule changed when he became a manager and had to work several Saturdays a month. Tasha and I were still going to join the Vitalo, but when she found out she was expecting, we couldn’t be looking for two substitutes every week,” she said.
“I really miss bowling in the Vitalo league with David and Natasha. I miss the competition among the family and the other league members. I miss the people,” she said.
Sader has recorded nine perfect games and three 800 triples to date, with a high of 815. Although she doesn’t bowl in many tournaments, she won the Electric City 600 Club Tournament last weekend at Sportsman’s Bowl with a 720 triple. She recorded a 736 triple in the Schenectady USBC Open Trios Championship at Towne Bowling Academy.
The Carthage native started bowling when she was just 4-years-old when her parents placed her and several siblings in the junior bowling program. “I really enjoyed it a lot right from the start,” she said. “I’ve been bowling ever since, except for maybe one year when I took a year off because I was pregnant with Tasha.”
Sader didn’t bowl in high school because there wasn’t a varsity bowling team at the time, but she became even more serious about her game when she met her husband and moved from Carthage to the Capital Region.
“David really got me more into bowling. I used to throw a back-up bowl,” she explained. “He helped me change my release and get used to a finger-tip ball. We first started bowling in East Greenbush before joining some leagues in Schenectady.”
When Sader was struggling with her game for a bit, she got some help from former PBA50 Player of the Year and Revolutions Pro Shop proprietor Brian LeClair. She seldom struggles these days.
She loves Storm equipment and currently uses a Phase II and a Zen Master, drilled by her son-in-law, Matt Fazzone at Action Bowling Supply.
“I consider myself very competitive,” she said.”I do get a little upset at myself when I don’t do as well as I think I should. I’m a down-and-in bowler, and I try to be consistent.”
“As long as my feet are slow, it makes my timing right on. That’s when I’m the most consistent,” she explained. “As soon as my feet are fast, I can get into trouble. But I’ve noticed lately that my feet are nice and slow, and I’ve been bowling pretty well.”
When Sader does compete in a rare tournament, it’s usually a charity event, like the annual Blizzard Bowl at Boulevard Bowl, but she is looking forward to competing in the NYS Women’s 600 Tournament in Binghamton and to another tournament in Vermont that draws a large contingent from New York headed by Joe “Flash” Gordon.
“Actually, I like watching people compete in tournaments more than I like bowling in them myself,” she said. “I like to watch everybody else, especially Matt.”
Sader said she started out bowling in several women’s leagues when she first moved to the area, but he prefers bowling in men’s leagues now that there are so few scratch leagues for women.
“Back when I first started out in the area, I was OK with bowling in the women’s leagues because I wasn’t that good. Now, I’m more competitive, and I prefer bowling in the men’s scratch leagues,” she said. “There is some great competition in the Sportsman’s Majors with the Diamond brothers [Jay and Jamie], John Musto, Chris Fedden, Billy McGaffin and Chris Smith. That league is pretty packed. It’s a great league, and I was really excited to win three jackpots in the last month.”
Known as an excellent spare shooter, Sader said if there was one tournament she hoped to bowl in someday; it’s the USBC Nationals in Las Vegas.
“Tammy has been bowling competitively for a number of years,” noted longtime Sportsman’s Majors secretary and former Schenectady USBC president Steve Renzi. “She’s extremely competitive, and she takes the game very seriously. Her ability to stay firm with her delivery is an asset. It allows her to be accurate, and in most cases, allows her to score well, even when the lanes transition and become difficult,” he added.
“She does have a very good spare game as well and she’s team player. I am glad she bowls in our Sportsman’s Majors league and I’m hoping she’ll be back on Saturdays, as well.”
SECTION II AT STATES
Section II will be well represented at the NYS Tournament this weekend at Strike ‘N Spare Lanes in Syracuse. The small schools, the Lansingburgh boys and the Middleburgh girls, roll on Friday (today) at noon, while both the boys’ and girls’ composite all-star teams compete on Saturday (boys at 8 a.m., girls at 2 p.m.). The large schools, Saratoga Springs boys and Mohonasen girls, compete Sunday at 9 a.m.
The Saratoga boys’ team includes senior Brady Jennings (229 average), freshman Macallan Gagne (204), junior Luke Rupp (199), senior Chris Youngs (196), junior Cameron Lehnert (191) and sophomore Jared Jennings (165). The Mohonasen girls’ contingent includes junior Madyson Jones (189 average), eighth-grader Kianna Macapinlac (189), junior Giovanna Fowler (186), senior Katilyn Gaudio (176), eighth-grader Arianna Quinlivan (170), eighth-grader Olivia Struffolino (167), eighth-grader Brianna Matteo (163) and senior Amy-Elizabeth Parody (159).

Mark your calendars for the Schenectady USBC Awards & Hall of Fame Dinner set for June 9 at the Waters Edge Lighthouse. The guest speaker will be PBA regional pro Sam Ventura. Tim Nash, who was elected to the association’s hall of fame last year when the banquet was canceled because of the pandemic, will be celebrated, as will this year’s inductees and tournament winners. Volunteers are needed for the 97th annual NYS Open Bowling Championship at Spare Time Latham from April 9 through May 15. Competition will be held on those four weekends with multiple squads each day. Those interested in helping out should contact Carol Judge (518-785-6694).
Phil James defeated Austin Van Buren in the championship match of the annual Town & Country Invitational last weekend. The tournament was a bracketed, double-elimination 64-player event.
Action Bowling Supply pro shop operator Matt Fazzone had a productive weekend, earning a berth in match play at the NYS Masters in Rochester and then finishing third/fourth in the Bud Light Shootout at the 34th annual Super Bud Bowl at Lighthouse Lanes in Oswego before also earning a spot and a double bye in this weekend’s finals.
The next Amateur League Bowlers Association of New York singles tournament will be held March 20 at Sportsman’s Bowl. Only bowlers with averages less than 215 are eligible. Handicap is 100% of 215, with a maximum of 75 pins per game. Entry fee is $35 if paid by Monday or $50 after that. There is a quick turnaround for the next tournament as the A.L.B.A.N.Y.’s “Main Event” follows on April 3 at Spare Time Latham. Qualifying for the 19th annual Donato Scratch Singles Tournament continues in a quest for the $3,200 top prize. Upcoming qualifiers so far include tonight (Friday) at Starlite Lanes in Gloversville at 9:30 p.m.; Sunday at Spare Time Latham at 9:30 a.m., Monday at Towne Bowling Academy at 9:15 p.m., March 19 at Towne Bowling Academy at 1:30 p.m. and then March 20 at Towne Bowling Academy at 9 a.m. and noon before the semifinals and finals. Towne Bowling Academy is also hosting the Uncle Nick Over/Under Doubles Sweeper March 19 at 1:30 p.m. First place will be $1,600. The format will be a four-game sweeper, total pins. The extremely popular 27th annual Blizzard Bowl at Boulevard Bowl kicks off Sunday and continues with squads on March 20, March 27, April 3 and April 10. All squads start at 11:45 a.m. Entry fee is $100 per four-person team and includes a Continental breakfast a half-hour before each squad. There are brackets and 50/50 drawings each squad. Top prize is $2,000, based on 160 entries. The event, in memory of Jack Scaccia Jr. and Frank DePalma, benefits the Boys and Girls Clubs of Schenectady. The Capital District Youth Scholarship Tour resumes March 19 at Sportsman’s Bowl at 1 p.m.
The second annual John Drexel Memorial Doubles Tournament is set for April 3 at Town & Country Lanes. Qualifying squads will be 9 a.m. and noon. First place will be $2,000, and second place will be $1,000. Entry fee is $130 per team. One in six teams advance to the finals off each squad. East Greenbush Bowling Center hosts the 10th annual Albany TNBA Doubles on April 23, April 24, April 30 and May 1 with time squads available at 10 a.m., noon, 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. each day. Entry fee is $64 per team but there are pre-paid special of $54 if you pay before the April 15. Top prize in doubles will be $3,000, based on 300 entries. There are also optional singles and scratch entries for $10 each. Bowlers must be sanctioned by both the TNBA and the USBC. Handicap will be 80% of the difference between the team average and 440 and based on last season’s highest book average or the season before. Green Island Lanes will host the 34th annual Charlie Bechard Memorial Senior Tournament. Divisions will be Class A (50-60 years of age), Class B (61-71) and Class C (72 and older). Entry fee is $25 and handicap will be 100% of 220. Maximum handicap is 70 pins per game. Squads are March 16, March 18, March 19, March 21, March 22, March 25, March 26 and March 30, all at 1 p.m. Entries can be turned in at Green Island Lanes, Cohoes Bowl or Uncle Sam Lanes.

Ryan Karabin produced games of 288 and 289 during an 800 triple, Joe VanDerLinden slammed a 279-795, Billy Wigand rolled a perfect game during a 792, Rich Strath fired a 268-784 and Justin Barcomb also tossed a 300 game en route to his 773 in a very high-scoring Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial City League card Monday night at Towne Bowling Academy. There were 25 triples of 703 or better.
Billy McGaffin Jr. hammered games of 278 and 290 during his 783 triple, Mike Guidarelli rolled a 256-757 and Cory Buckley delivered a 254-749 in the Sportsman’s Majors Monday night at Sportsman’s Bowl.
Karabin connected for a 300 game during a 980 four-game series, P.J. Derenzo put together a 279-976 and Mark Hansen drilled a 247-954 in the Frank DePalma Boulevard Classic at Boulevard Bowl Tuesday night.
VanDerLinden, a Schenectady USBC Hall of Famer, tossed a 279-1,032 four-game series to pace the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial Women’s Doubles league Wednesday night at Towne Bowling Academy. Tom Earl rolled a perfect game during his 997 set.
