Every January, more and more people try Veganuary – a 30 day challenge which encourages people to follow a vegan lifestyle for a whole month. Whilst people ditch meat and dairy for many reasons such as for their health, animal welfare and to protect the environment, some just can’t resist their old carnivore ways. Find out which stars had beef with the vegan lifestyle and are back to eating meat…
Miley embraced the vegan lifestyle back in 2013 after witnessing her dog Floyd being mauled to death by a coyote. But despite being an animal rights advocate for many years, the ‘Hannah Montana’ star reverted back to eating meat after her brain stopped working. The singer – who was previously married to actor Liam Hemsworth – said: “I was vegan for a very long time and I’ve had to introduce fish and omegas into my life because my brain wasn’t functioning properly. “My ex-husband cooked me some fish on the grill, I cried, like, for a long time. I cried for the fish… it really hurts me to eat fish. “Now I’m so much sharper than I was and I think that I was, at one point, pretty malnourished. I remember going to Glastonbury and that was a show that I loved – I loved my performance – but I was running on empty.”
The ‘Hunger Games’ star was in an on-off relationship with Miley Cyrus for 10 years before they called it quits in 2020. During their time together they were known as the vegan power couple, but Liam – who went vegan in 2015, a decision most likely influenced by his ex-wife – quit in 2019 after a kidney stone left him with no appetite. He said at the time: “The first two years, I felt great. I felt my energy was high. I felt like my body was strong, cardio was high, everything felt really good. “But then I was feeling really low and lethargic and wasn’t feeling good generally and then I got a kidney stone.”
Back in 2010 the action star admitted she’d been vegan “for a long time” but ditched the diet after claiming the eating plan led to her lacking vital nutrients. She said: “I found I was not getting enough nutrition.”
The Oscar-winning actress first embraced veganism when she played Catwoman in 2012 Batman movie ‘The Dark Knight Rises’. Hathaway even curated a vegan menu for her wedding to husband Adam Shulman that same year. However, Hathaway ditched the vegan diet in 2014 after developing a sudden taste for fish. The ‘Interstellar’ star was out with co-star Matt Damon and her husband at a Michelin Star restaurant in Iceland when she realised what she had been missing after she bit into a life changing salmon dish. She said: “So then I was the only chick and I’m the vegan and everyone’s just going with the flow. So I asked, ‘Is your fish local?’ And they said, ‘Do you see that fjord?’ So I had a piece of salmon and my brain felt like a computer rebooting.”
Zooey Deschanel and her younger sister, ‘Bones’ star Emily Deschanel, may share the same love of acting, but in regards to their diet the sisters would probably agree they could not be more opposite. According to Zooey, she sufferers from a lot of food sensitivities and finds it extremely difficult to stick to a vegan diet when she’s already gluten-free and soy-free. She said: “My older sister has been a very, very committed vegan since high school. I wish I could be like that, but I’m not. “I have a lot of food sensitivities — I can’t eat wheat or soy — and it was very difficult to eat and get enough calories. It was even impossible to eat at a vegan restaurant.”
Kristen Bell has been a vegetarian since the age of 11, turned completely vegan in 2012 after watching the documentary ‘Forks Over Knives’. Bell found the change very easy at first until she realised she was eating for two. When pregnant with first daughter Lincoln, eight – who she shares with husband Dax Shepard – Bell struggled to stay energised throughout the day on a vegan diet. She said: “It felt like I needed more calories. I was pretty conscious of it.”
Back in 2015 the ‘Shaft’ star announced he went vegan after discovering he had a life-threatening blood clot near his heart, with doctors saying that ditching meat and dairy would save his life. Jackson quit being vegan after seven months, however, following his three stone weight loss thanks to the new regime, as ‘Tarzan’ film bosses threatened they’d fire him if he didn’t bulk up. He said: “They threatened to fire me from the ‘Tarzan‘ movie if I didn’t gain 20lbs. I wound up losing 40lbs. “So I decided to go eat and now I’m not a vegan anymore. I have protein meals two to three times a week and eat vegetarian the other four days.”
The former US President turned vegan in 2010 to regain his health following major heart surgery. However, after initially losing weight by cutting back on the meat and dairy, Bill’s doctor encouraged him to “occasionally eat fish” that’s packed with Omega 3 and is good for the heart to avoid another trip to the emergency room. Dr. Mark Hyman said: “It’s hard being a vegan to eat enough good, quality protein and not have too much starch. “I know a lot of fat vegans.”
The ‘Crazy In Love’ singer was a vegan for several years and even posted a YouTube video in 2019 which revealed she prepared for Coachella 2018 by following a vegan regime called ’22 Days of Nutrition’. However, Queen Bey, who’s always been an advocate for animal rights, introduced fish into her diet in 2020 after claiming her brain was malfunctioning due to the lack of Omega 3.
The talk show host switched to a vegan diet back in 2008 in a bid to boost her energy by following a diet of “no animals, no dairy, nothing processed; a lot of soup, veggies, rice, beans, legumes”. However, in her 2019 Netflix stand-up comedy special “Relatable”, Ellen revealed she wasn’t actually vegan just like to joke about it and ended her diet for no reason. She said: “I’m not really vegan, I say it for the joke … I was vegan for eight years and I really believe that it’s great for you. “I was healthier than I’d ever been, I loved being vegan. But just in the last year or two for no reason really, I started eating a piece of fish once in a while.”
