Start 2023 on the right or left foot on a hike at a local, state, or national park in the Highland Lakes. Several have guided hikes and other activities scheduled on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. If you're going it alone or with a buddy, check out the Highland Lakes Hiking Guide for the most scenic spots.
Hike, run, ride, and paddle into the new year at Inks Lake State Park in Burnet County. The park has four outdoor events scheduled to greet the new year.

On Dec. 31, participate in a guided hike with a ranger on the Lake Trail. Meet at 11 p.m. at the trailhead; hiking begins at 11:30 p.m. before the countdown to 2023.

On Jan. 1, take it up a notch with a run around the Lake and Pecan Flats trails starting at 8:30 a.m., a bike ride through the park and campgrounds at 11 a.m., and then a short paddling trip by canoe or kayak on Inks Lake. You don't have to do all three — but why not?

In fact, if you participate in three out of the four activities those two days, you get a sticker and a great start to your resolutions.
Take a guided hike on New Year's Eve at Pedernales Falls, just outside of Johnson City, to watch the last sunset of 2022. Meet at 4:30 p.m. at the Pedernales Falls Trailhead parking lot for a 2.5-mile trek along rocky and slippery terrain with steep drops and mud — not an easy jaunt.

The next day, choose from two guided hikes — Pedernales Falls and beyond at 8:30 a.m. and the Hackenburg Loop Trail at noon — and then enjoy New Year's Day traditions around a campfire at 3 p.m. Click the link for details along with a few suggestions for self-guided hikes.
Get a Texas history lesson and more at 10 a.m. Jan. 1 on this moderate difficulty hike. See the Official Texas Longhorn Herd, a statue of President Lyndon B. Johnson, the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm, and more at the Stonewall park.
Go off trail, on a loop, or up to the top of Enchanted Rock on Jan. 1. Each of the three guided hikes start in the morning. The popular park is near the Gillespie-Llano county line.

The Little Rock Wander with a Master Naturalist explores a lesser-visited section of the state natural area from 9:30-11 a.m. It's a challenging, 1- to 2-mile hike with a 400-foot elevation gain up the side of Little Rock. No pets allowed.

The Scenic Overlook Hike at 10:30 a.m. is a little easier and pet-friendly and includes a beautiful view of the Texas Hill Country.

On the Summit Hike at 11 a.m., learn about Enchanted Rock's geology, history, and biology. No pets allowed.
A little farther out, this state park in Bend offers a guided hike on the Spicewood Canyon Trail to the overlook on Dec. 31 at 10 a.m. and a New Year's Day trek at 10:30 a.m. on the Cedar Chopper Trail.
You can map out your own last or first day hike — for free — at Longhorn Cavern State Park and Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge. Or, pick a local or Lower Colorado River Authority park, including Shaffer Bend Recreation Area, for your walking adventure. (Some LCRA parks have entrance fees.)

Happy hiking!
