Kristin and Aaron Bond have started two new businesses this year. First came New Leaf Farms urban microfarm in the spring, which utilizes Kristin’s love of gardening to cultivate herb, vegetable and flower starts using organic soil and natural farming methods. Then, after a health scare with one of their older dogs, the Bonds launched Okie Doggie Gourmet Treats and Wellness.
Kristin, who has a background in the restaurant industry and a love for cooking, creates high quality, all-natural dog treats and other wellness products for dogs.
“When our older dog James was diagnosed with Cushing’s Disease, which is luckily treatable, it got us talking about all the dogs’ health and refocused on what they were eating.” says Aaron, who handles the marketing for New Leaf and Okie Doggie in addition to having a full time job. “It’s hard to find healthy food and treats for your dog. A lot of products are marketed as ‘healthy’, but then you flip it over and still see all these ingredients that you can’t pronounce.”
After putting James on a homemade, anti-inflammatory diet, the Bonds have seen huge improvement in his health.
“He does have to take one pill a day, but other than that, he is basically back to normal. We give him bone broth three times a week on top of his kibble and that has helped his joint health dramatically,” Kristin says.
Now that the growing season is over, Kristin has transitioned away from the plants of New Leaf and is focusing on treats full time. She will be at many pop-ups and markets throughout the season, including Braums’ An Affair of the Heart this weekend, Small Business Saturday at Farm Hippie, 1117 W. Main, in Collinsville on Nov. 26, and on Dec. 2-4 at Christmas at the Ranch at 181 Ranch in Bixby.
Find Okie Doggie products at Pure Health Collective, 201 W. Main St., in Jenks, Farm Hippie, and online at okiedoggie.com. Follow Okie Doggie updates on the New Leaf Farms Facebook page.
