Happy Birthday, Elvis Presley! The King of Rock and Roll would have celebrated his 88th birthday on January 8, 2023. Sadly, the ‘Hound Dog’ hitmaker died from a heart attack in 1977, aged just 42. Presley changed the music scene forever with his chart-topping hits and provocative hip swinging routine that caused a national scandal and cemented his place as an icon. Here are 10 things you never knew about Elvis Presley…
Elvis was born 35 minutes after his older brother, Jesse Garon Presley. Sadly, Jesse was stillborn and was buried the next day in an unmarked grave in a cemetery near their family home. Elvis spoke freely of his twin despite never knowing him.
A bombshell book written by author Joel Williamson claimed that the King of Rock and Roll was preyed on underaged girls whilst on tour. According to the book, Presley groomed three 14-year-old girls who would pillow fight, tickle, wrestle and kiss him. Presley was 19 when he dated 15-year-old Dixie Lock, who was just one of his many well known lovers. He even took her to her junior prom whilst they dated. In 1959, Elvis first met his famous wife Priscilla Presley – who was 14 years old at the time. Lamar Fike, Elvis’ lifetime friend, said: “He was fascinated with the idea of real young teenage girls. It scared the hell out of all of us.”
The sex symbol was nothing but a hound dog himself that had an endless supply of women at his disposal. Once socially awkward and undesirable, girls were lining up to spend the night with Elvis after he became famous, and he could bed up to three different women a day. Over the years Elvis developed many fetishes such as virgins, asking girls to wear white panties and voyeurism. Although Elvis had hundreds of women falling at his feet, he allegedly preferred to watch rather then engage in actual intercourse.
Elvis apparently did not live up to his reputation as a sex symbol and was a flop in bed. According to actress Cybil Shepherd, lovemaking with Elvis was overrated as she had to teach him certain skills. The late Natalie Wood also dated Elvis briefly in 1956 but was left frustrated on a number of occasions over their lack of bedroom chemistry. After storming out of their hotel room one night, Natalie asked his bodyguards: “What’s wrong with your boss? All hands, no action. I thought he was supposed to be king of the sack, but he doesn’t want to do it with me.”
After a show in Wisconsin, an urgent message from the local Catholic diocese’s newspaper was sent to FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. The correspondence warned that Elvis’ “actions and motions” were a danger to the US and teenage youth. It read: “Presley is a definite danger to the security of the United States. … [His] actions and motions were such as to rouse the passions of teenaged youth. … After the show, more than 1,000 teenagers tried to gang into Presley’s room at the auditorium. … Indications of the harm Presley did just in La Crosse were the two high school girls … whose abdomen and thigh had Presley’s autograph.”
Whilst many people work as Elvis impersonators, Elvis was an impersonator himself of LAPD. The ‘Suspicious Minds’ singer wore a fake police badge whilst driving around in a car with a flashing blue light. He targeted drivers who drove over the speed limit, but rather than issuing tickets he’d give them free autographs instead.
In 2015, Priscilla Presley revealed in an interview that Elvis was terrified of germs. So much so that he wouldn’t even use cutlery unless it was new and unused. She said: “I think he just didn’t like to put his mouth where other people put their mouth.”
Elvis was drafted into the army where he was introduced to karate. He trained with Jurgen Seydel and practised the martial art religiously. It became a lifelong interest of the rocker’s and he later incorporated the moves into his live performances.
Elvis went as far as hiring a Las Vegas doctor to put him in a medically induced coma for days to avoid temptation as he ballooned during his time performing in Sin City. His favorite food was a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich.
Elvis received a death threat in 1970 at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. It stated his life was at risk unless he paid $50,000. The FBI were called and Elvis took to the stage during his next performance with a handgun in his boot and a pistol in his waistband.
