Today is a special day. Not only is it National Ice Cream Soda Day, but it is also Don’s birthday. Happy birthday, Honey Bunny! Hope you have a wonderful day. I love you more. Thanks for being my proofreader. You are the best.
Ice cream sodas? Can you say yummy? Ice cream sodas are a real summertime treat. Enjoying an ice cream soda is a great way to cool down during the dog days of summer. And we are in the dog days of summer. Ugh! But don’t limit your consumption of this frothy drink to just summer months. Ice cream sodas can and should be enjoyed every month of the year.
According to Holiday Insights, the ice cream soda was first made in 1874 by Robert Green, a vendor at the Philadelphia Jamboree celebrating the city’s 150th anniversary. He ran out of ice for the sodas he was selling, so he began to put a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream in the sodas he served. He later claimed the idea for ice cream sodas came to him in a dream. Regardless of which story caused him to put ice cream into a glass of soda, we are glad he did. Robert Green is the only person with the words, “Originator of the Ice Cream Soda” on his tombstone.
To enjoy an ice cream soda today, all you need is a couple of scoops of your favorite ice cream in a tall glass, your favorite soda, and a straw. Remember to put the ice cream in a cold glass first, then slowly pour the cold soda down the inside of the glass. Yummy! Then again, you may want to drink the ice cream soda while eating a hot dog, because today is National Hot Dog Day, too.
Hot diggity dog! We get to celebrate one of America’s favorite summer sandwiches. Hot dogs are center stage on the grill and at picnics all across America. They are served in ballparks, from carts on street corners, at county fairs — some on a stick covered in cornbread and deep-fried. It isn’t hard to find them.
We consume so many hot dogs in so many venues that it is hard to take a count of how many we consume. However, by one count, we bought more than 837 million packages of hot dogs from retail outlets in a year, and over 24 million hot dogs at baseball stadiums.
Hot dogs are prepared many ways with all kinds of toppings. There is no right or wrong way. I eat my hot dog by charring it on the barbecue, and placing it in a toasted bun with ketchup, mayonnaise and pickle relish. Hey! Hey! There is no judging on how hot dogs are prepared. To each his own when it comes to preparing hot dogs. You may be wondering what is in a hot dog. Don’t ask, and I won’t tell. Sometimes, it’s best not knowing.
Okay, so I may have stirred a little hornet’s nest last week about how our high school students should be dressing better for school. I’m not saying three-piece suits or three-inch heels, or school uniforms (although school uniforms would solve all the discussion). Just nice fitting clothes that don’t show a midriff or cleavage and that cover the behind, as well as a belt so pants don’t sag. Nice dresses, pants, skirts and shirts that cover appropriately is a start. Who knows? Maybe that will be the next fashion craze.
Did you see the full moon last week? Talk about beautiful. With all the particles in the air from the fires, it was orange when it rose above the mountain range. And it was considered a super full moon because it was close to Earth. I’m looking forward to the next full moon on Aug. 11 to see if it is as striking.
