Furry Friends claws out 'successful weekend' at adopt-a-thon – BarrieToday

The Furry Friends adopt-a-thon at a south-end Barrie pet store has been a success and has left many people — and cats — happy. 
Furry Friends is partnered with PetSmart Charities of Canada to host a National Adoption Weekend, which began Friday and wrapped up Sunday afternoon at 33 Mapleview Dr. E.
Furry Friends volunteer Sue MacIntyre said they found homes for 30 cats and still had 24 left.
“We’re happy so far — this has been a successful weekend," MacIntyre told BarrieToday. "We really hope we can get the remaining cats into some loving families, but we’ll have to see.”
Adoption fees ranged from $220 to $260 (cash and e-transfer). All cats and kittens are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and treated against parasites. Most are also microchipped. All adopters received a PetSmart coupon book valued at $300 and a complementary bag of Hill’s Science Diet cat food.
MacIntyre said the adopt-a-thon typically sees people looking for different things when it comes to a new cat.
“It ranges from those looking for a kitten, which is probably the most popular type that is sought after, to someone looking for an older cat,” said MacIntyre. “Often you’ll see young families want to adopt a kitten but many seniors are wanting an older cat to be a companion. Then of course you just get people who want to come and cuddle the cats.”
Furry Friends can hold about 75 cats and there several foster families, which the organization is always looking for due to the high number of cats.
“At one time, we had 250 cats and the facility can’t hold that many, so we are always in need of fosters,” said MacIntyre. 
MacIntyre admits that over the last two years of the pandemic, all the cats would have been gone, so she has noticed a change in how many people are seeking to adopt.
