An Upstate woman and her dog were rescued early Christmas morning after smoke and flames spread through her home, officials said.
In a joint release from Greenwood city and county fire department and Highway 34 Fire and Rescue, crews responded to the fire call at about 7:25 a.m. at a home on Florida Avenue.
Dispatchers stayed on the phone with the woman until crews arrived.
“The fire was so significant (that) the smoke was overwhelming her,” officials said in the release.
Crews first on the scene said heavy smoke was showing from the building as they got to work pulling hoses and entering the house.
Once inside the fire, crews found the woman and got her out of the house. A dog was also found inside the burning home and was also rescued, they said.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but is believed to be electrical in nature, officials said.

The woman was treated at the scene and taken by Greenwood County EMS to Self Regional Healthcare.
She is expected to survive her injuries, officials said.

The response to the fire was a shared response as part of the recently adopted city/county automatic aid agreement.
“The effectiveness of the automatic aide agreement without a doubt insured a good outcome on this Christmas morning,” officials said.
