Extension Homemakers celebrate the 'dog days of summer' – Hot Springs Sentinel

Garland County Extension Homemakers recently held its annual summer council meeting.
The theme centered around dogs. Ivy Wood from the Garland County Humane Society was the guest speaker. Several items of dog food and treats as well as monetary donations were presented to Wood for the Humane Society.
Several awards were given out at the event, including the Gold Star Awards, which are given on a point basis according to the required activities of EHC as well as the completion of club-related projects. Rita Blackwood, immediate past president of GCEHC, presented the awards.
Receiving three gold stars, the highest rating, were the following clubs: Jane Oliver for All Things Home, Lynn Paul for Crazy Quilters, Jennifer Orr for Fiber Therapy, Janie Woods for Lakeside and Kathy Nelson for Loyal Ladies.
Receiving two gold stars were Blackwood for Paper Dolls and Sharon Parrett for Yes We Can. Receiving one gold star was Gail McKee for Park Heights.
The Member of the Year Award, also presented by Blackwood, was based on nominations written up by a club representative. The recipients were Harvey Bradstreet, All Things Home; Merylann Black, Crazy Quilters; Ceci Dawn, Fiber Therapy; Marcia Albaugh, Lakeside; Karen Faires, Loyal Ladies; Cindy Rossa, Paper Dolls; Ingrid Planke, Park Heights; and Parrett, Yes We Can.
Longevity awards were presented by Blackwood to two clubs: Lakeside Club, for 25 years, was presented to Albaugh, president. Loyal Ladies Club for 50 years presented to Nelson, president.
Pennies for Friendship were collected. This is a program to aid women in underdeveloped countries. The coins help members the Country Women’s Council speak for rural women and homemakers at United Nations meetings or arrange seminars in literacy, nutrition and child care in developing nations; $66.30 was collected to support these women, the release said.
Arkansas Extension Homemakers is the “largest volunteer organization in the state of Arkansas,” the release said. Alison Crane, GCEHC adviser, announced that Garland County EHC volunteers reported a total of 18,528 service hours that were accomplished by just 100 members from July 2021 to June 2022. The monetary value for this number of hours, at $29.95 an hour, works out to be $554,913.60.
The organization sponsors many events such as craft days at the fairgrounds, 4-H events, Relay for Life, wewing turbans for cancer patients, raising funds for scholarships, supporting veteran activities, helping with the homeless, and running the kitchen and dining room during the county fair and the Arts and Crafts Fair, the release said.
