Drive under way to help injured pet | Kingston/Frontenac This Week – Kingston This Week
Margaret Haylock Capon
Until a short time ago. Maddie Megraw was a good time girl who enjoyed the outdoors, but her life changed dramatically when she was “mugged.” The four-year-old Boxer owned by Heather Todd and Christian Megraw was attacked by another dog in her neighbourhood and again at the dog park. She experienced serious leg injuries and now requires surgery or surgeries expected to cost $7,000 or more, says Todd.
Because they moved to Picton, only a few months ago, Todd and Megraw did not have a veterinarian here and were unable to find one locally who was taking new patients. A friend located a veterinarian in Durham who agreed to see Maddie. Preliminary tests were done and the need for surgery confirmed. However, the estimated cost of the operation(s) and the fact that a payment plan is not an option have placed this urgently needed treatment financially out of reach for Maddie’s owners.
“She has changed the lives of her family. She’s caring, a lovable teddy bear who wants to run and play and catch her ball and enjoy car rides with her head out the window smiling at people.” says Todd.
“She’s the heart of our home and needs us now more than ever.”
Determined to find a way to fund the surgery Maddie needs, Todd and Megraw are appealing to the community for donations of pop cans, bottles, and scrap metal. Plans for a yard sale are underway and a raffle will be held for a four-foot tall cedar bear by chainsaw carving artist Lee Wigmore. Two hundred tickets will be available for the draw and will be sold for $20 each.
Appeals have been posted on social media for help in making these fundraisers successful and Maddie Megraw now has her own facebook page.
“To anyone who can help, we would be forever grateful.’ says Todd.
Items for donation to the bottle drive for Maddie can be picked up by contacting Heather Todd at [email protected] (e-mail) or by calling her at 416-818-8967 Donations also may be dropped off at 12 Caen Court (Picton Heights), the home of Todd and Megraw. Information about how to buy a ticket for the upcoming raffle on the chainsaw carving artist’s bear will also be provided by contacting Todd by telephone or e-mail. The draw will be made publicly as part of the campaign to save Maddie.
