Pet parents gathered at the James Prendergast Library in droves Wednesday afternoon for the Chautauqua County Humane Society’s Drive-Thru Pet Pantry.
A line of cars filled the parking lot and wrapped around the corner onto Cherry Street in Jamestown as humane society volunteers headed out to get more dog and cat food. Jennifer Bartkowski, director of human and animal support services, said people were lined up before the event started at 2 p.m. The group started the giveaway early, handing out bags of small and large dog food, dog biscuits and cat food to those in line.
Bartkowski said at the beginning of the pet pantry event, two vans full of pet food were full — but were shortly emptied 30 minutes after the official start time. About 70 pounds of dog food and 1,000 pounds of cat food were given away in minutes.
Volunteers rushed out to get more food to continue the giveaway.
“We’re going to try to be here until 5 p.m.,” she said. “We will replenish and people will be coming back in about a half-hour to pick up since we were out.”
When volunteers returned with their trunks and back seats full of pet food, the army of volunteers went to work, delivering them to each car in line. Bartkowski wondered aloud if the giveaway would last until 5 p.m., worried that they would run out again.
Bartkowski said those who were unable to make it to the event can contact either The Salvation Army or the Chautauqua County Humane Society regarding their usual pet food pantry programs at both locations.
