Dog shoes offer more than just cuteness, expert says – KSL NewsRadio

SALT LAKE CITY — As the weather gets colder, paw care for pets is increasingly important. Dog shoes aren’t just a cute fashion statement, it actually allows them to enjoy the outdoors just like humans.
Kathie Beals runs Herding Haven, a rescue shelter for working dogs. Beals said that the salt used for icy walkways can be very harsh on dogs’ paws. The salt can get between their toes, causing irritation.
And, just like humans, dogs can get frostbite. So dog shoes can provide protection in various ways.
Beals said there’s more to keep in mind during the winter too. Dog owners should be prepared before heading out for a winter walk with their companions.
“Just like we want to make sure that we have water for ourselves when we go hiking or skiing, or what have you, in the snow,” Beals said. “We want to make sure that we’ve got water so that our dogs can stay hydrated.”
