Dog missing for 30 days found 40 miles away from Massachusetts … – USA TODAY
QUINCY, Mass. — Almost a month had gone by since Jordian Maldonado’s 14-year-old pit bull, Haze, escaped from his yard in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and went missing. He was getting discouraged.
Maldonado reached out to Missing Dogs Massachusetts, a group of volunteers who help track down lost pets, and used social media as much as possible to spread the word about Haze.
“At the beginning, no one reported him and no one had seen him, and I had some bad thoughts. We had some cold nights, and I didn’t know if he had wandered into the woods or the train tracks,” Maldonado said. “I had faith he was alive. For some reason, I figured someone took him.”
Maldonado said he’s had Haze since he was a puppy, and the thought of not seeing him again was heartbreaking.
“It wasn’t how I expected to say my goodbyes to him,” he said.
In California:A dog went missing in 2010 and was declared dead. She was just reunited with her owner.
Nearly a month and some 40 miles later, Maldonado finally learned where Haze had been all that time: Quincy Animal Shelter.
Maldonado and Haze were recently reunited at the shelter in a heartwarming moment captured on video by volunteers at the shelter.
“He was so excited to see me. He must have thought I abandoned him,” Maldonado said. “I’m really grateful for the people at the shelter who took care of him all that time. He was there for three weeks.”
A woman reportedly found Haze in Quincy on Nov. 19, who then turned him into the shelter, where he remained for several weeks. The shelter then posted a photo of Haze, who they called Eeyore, announcing he was available for adoption.
Jenny Scacca, a volunteer with Missing Dogs Massachusetts, said she keeps an album of missing dog photos on her phone, and just so happened to see Haze before stumbling across the shelter’s post.
“I noticed the brown ears and thought it looked like it could be the same dog,” she said. “A volunteer called the family and they immediately thought it was him.”
Maldonado made the trip from Lawrence to Quincy to see the dog in person. Without a doubt, it was Haze.
He said the reunion was “awesome,” and he’s thankful to have his dog back at home after a long few weeks.
“I missed him so much. He’s always around me,” Maldonado said.

Scacca stressed how important it is for pet owners to microchip their pets, which a veterinarian or shelter can then scan and contact the owner. She said it’s also important to contact animal control officers and shelters within a 25-mile radius, since dogs can travel over time or get picked up and moved.
“We’ll never know the real story of what happened to Haze and how he got there,” she said. “If I didn’t see the adoption post, I don’t think he would be home right now.”
