A Texas man and his dog were reunited today at Orange County Animal Services after more than seven years apart.
Kerry Smith’s dog Jazzy ran away from their Fort Worth, Texas, home during July 4 fireworks and was never seen by Smith again. Then Orange County Animal Services took in an abandoned dog found in a motel room without food or water.
They scanned Jazzy for a microchip and were able to find her owner. Animal Services was able to track down Smith and let him know that his dog was alive and waiting for him at their shelter.
Smith flew into Orlando on Saturday to reunite with Jazzy for the first time in years and is excited to bring her back home. Smith credits the microchip for finally bringing the two of them back together.
“My message to everybody is to chip your dog. And I knew as soon as she went to a vet that I would get the call that I would be waiting for for seven years,” Smith said. “I always wondered if she was alive, I always wondered if she was happy, if she was feeling well, and she’s not now, but we will get her better.”
Smith says the next steps will be to shower her with love and help her get better.
