MEXICO CITY (AP) — Residents of a town in north-central Mexico were stunned to see a dog running down the street with a human head in its mouth.
Officials in the violence-plagued state of Zacatecas confirmed the incident and said Thursday that police eventually managed to wrest the head away from the dog.

Authorities are looking for a stolen sign marking a centuries-old tree that inspired Louisiana author Ernest Gaines. The Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff’s Office said the historical marker identifying the “Miss Jane Pittman Oak” was stolen recently and the parish government is offering a $500 reward for information leading to its recovery or the arrest of the thief. The tree itself is believed to be about 400 years old and served as partial inspiration for “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,” the book that gained widespread notice for the internationally acclaimed award-winning author. An attorney for a death row inmate in Tennessee who cut off his penis shortly after asking to be placed on suicide watch has filed a complaint against prison officials. The motion filed Friday in Nashville’s Davidson County Chancery Court asks the judge to declare that the prison’s treatment of Henry Hodges violate his constitutional rights. The complaint says that after Hodges severed his penis, he was hospitalized. He returned to Riverbend Maximum Security Institution on Oct. 21. Since then, he has been held naked in restraints on a thin mattress over a concrete slab. The complaint asks the court to order prison officials to release Hodges from his restraints, provide him with clothing, and appoint an independent monitor of his mental and physical health treatment.
The most influential anti-abortion group in Kansas politics is urging voters in mailers to remove five of the seven justices on the state Supreme Court. Kansans for Life has criticized the court for a 2019 decision declaring that access to abortion is a fundamental right under the state constitution, and the group campaigned for a proposed amendment declaring that the state constitution doesn’t grant a right to abortion. Kansas voters decisively rejected that amendment in August, and abortion rights supporters have been expecting an ouster campaign. Two of the targeted justices voted to affirm abortion rights in the 2019 decision, and three are appointees of Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly.

A rural Nevada county awash with voting machine conspiracy theories has stopped its unprecedented effort to hand count ballots cast in advance of Election Day. The move on Friday followed a state Supreme Court order late Thursday and a directive by the state’s top election official. But Nye County officials also vowed to try again to gain approval from the court and Republican Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske to resume the count. A county statement to The Associated Press says tallies won’t be conducted Friday, and weekend counting wasn’t scheduled. A report being released by a U.S. House committee says backers of a proposed copper and gold mine in southwest Alaska “tried to trick regulators by pretending to pursue a smaller project with the intention of expanding” after the project was approved. The report focuses on the proposed Pebble Mine. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 2020 rejected a key permit authorization for the project. That decision has been appealed by the Pebble Limited Partnership, which wants to develop the mine. The project is in Alaska’s Bristol Bay region, which is known for its salmon runs. The report from Democratic Reps. Peter DeFazio of Oregon and Grace Napolitano of California makes several recommendations, including environmental review process changes.

Of all the greats to emerge in the 1950s after Elvis Presley, no one personified every parent’s fear of the dangers of rock ’n roll more than Lewis, with his leering tenor and cocky sneer. His talent, energy and ego collided into into piano-pumping perfection on hits like “Great Balls of Fire” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.” Lewis’ infamous private life included a marriage to his 12- or 13-year-old cousin who later alleged physical and mental cruelty.
Renewed clashes between government soldiers and M23 rebels have forced more people from their homes in eastern Congo. The fighting that resumed around 5 a.m., Friday sent panic-stricken residents fleeing the towns of Rugari, Kalengera and Kabaya. Some headed for Kanyaruchinya near Goma. The U.N. has said that some 40,000 people have been displaced since hostilities between the two sides broke out on Oct. 20. The M23 rebels were largely inactive for nearly a decade before they reemerged last November. A Tucson father who showed up to his child’s elementary school with zip ties and threatened to arrest the principal over COVID-19 quarantine measures has been convicted of several misdemeanor offenses. The Arizona Daily Star reports that Kelly Walker was found guilty Wednesday in Tucson City Court of two charges of disrupting an educational institution. He was also found guilty of three other counts including disorderly conduct. In September 2021, cellphone video showed Walker and two other men at Mesquite Elementary School with military-style black zip ties. The principal called police and Walker was arrested. He will be sentenced next month.

A federal lawsuit says a Georgia man and his family “have faced threats of violence and live in fear” since the movie “2000 Mules” falsely accused him of ballot fraud during the 2020 election. The widely debunked film includes surveillance video showing Mark Andrews, his face blurred, depositing five ballots in a dropbox with a voiceover by filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza calling it a crime. In fact, a state investigation found, Andrews was dropping off ballots for himself, his wife and their three adult children, who all live at the same address. That is legal in Georgia and a state investigator found no evidence of wrongdoing. Andrews on Wednesday sued D’Souza and others involved in the film’s production.

The U.N. human rights office has condemned the killing of an anti-dam activist in the southern Mexico state of Oaxaca. State prosecutors say the body of Filogonio Martínez was found Wednesday, and didn’t show signs of violence. But the office of the U.N. High Commissioner on Human Rights said Martínez had been shot to death. He was part of a group that opposed a hydroelectric dam on the Rio Verde river. The group said five of his fellow anti-dam activists were killed in 2021. Mexico is the deadliest place in the world for environmental and land defense activists, according to the Global Witness group.
