The dog-assisted therapy programme offered at a hospital in Axarquia, in the province of Malaga, helps young patients cope with medical treatment.
The Malaga branch of the nursing union SATSE has collaborated in the implementation of a dog-assisted therapy programme in the paediatrics unit of the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquia.
In a statement released on September 16, SATSE stated that dog-assisted therapy can be used in numerous ways, both with children who are staying in the hospital and with those who are attending general consultations or treatment sessions.
According to SATSE, the presence of a dog during certain medical interventions can help keep patients calm, allowing professionals to carry out procedures such as injecting insulin more easily.
This project is the result of the collaboration between the human and canine team of the organisation Perruneando, which specialises in dog-assisted interventions, the medical professionals at the hospital in Axarquia and the nursing union SATSE.
“SATSE will always contribute towards projects that aim to improve the quality of healthcare for users and facilitate the work carried out by health professionals,” they said.
