CATSKILL — A Cairo woman and her husband have been indicted on charges stemming from an alleged sword attack on their pet dog in 2021.
A Greene County grand jury has handed up indictments against Pauline Waldron, 68, and James Waldron, 66, both of Cairo, Greene County District Attorney Joseph Stanzione said Monday.
Pauline Waldron was charged Friday in Greene County Court with aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony, and failure to provide sustenance, a misdemeanor, Stanzione said. James Waldron was charged with failure to provide sustenance, a misdemeanor.
Pauline and James Waldron pleaded not guilty to the charges at their arraignment before Greene County Court Judge Charles Tailleur, Stanzione said.
A date has not been set for the Waldrons’ next court appearance, Stanzione said.
Pauline Waldron was charged by the Greene County Sheriff’s Office on June 30, 2021, with one count of aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony. Pauline Waldron is accused of attempting to decapitate the female Australian Cattle Dog with a sword on June 29, stabbing the dog several times, and then leaving the animal for eight hours to die without seeking medical care.
The dog, Peaches, underwent emergency, life-saving surgery at Catskill Animal Hospital on Route 9W in Catskill, and then was transferred to a specialist veterinary clinic at an undisclosed location in the Albany area.
The intensive procedure at Catskill Animal Hospital lasted for several hours, Columbia-Greene Humane Society President Ron Perez said. The dog was in extreme pain when she arrived at the hospital.
The day after the alleged attack, Pauline Waldron was arraigned in Cairo Town Court before Justice Tanja Sirago. She was released on her own recognizance pending a future court appearance.
Over the course of the past year, the case was moved from Cairo Town Court to Greene County Court.
“Peaches made a remarkable recovery in a short amount of time,” Perez said.
After recovering from her injuries at a foster home, Peaches arrived at Columbia-Greene Humane Society in early fall of 2021, and was placed for adoption.
It was initially difficult in finding a home for Peaches, because she would need to go to a location where she would be the only pet and she would also need a lot of land to run on, due to her breed, Perez said.
Peaches’ year-long odyssey of suffering and recovery ended in late July, when Haley Miller of Schoharie County and her boyfriend traveled to Columbia County to meet her.
The couple are previous owners of an Australian Cattle Dog, so they are familiar with the breed, and they live in a rural area with plenty of land, Perez said.
Miller and her boyfriend specifically traveled to the Columbia-Greene Humane Society looking for Peaches, she said.
“I had been reading the stories of what happened to her, and have been following her recovery online,” Miller said.
Peaches left the shelter with Miller and her boyfriend July 30.
Miller and Peaches have been getting along very well, and the dog has been settling in equally well, Miller said.
The property where Miller and her boyfriend live contains about 100 acres, so there is plenty of room for Peaches to run, she said.
