BURLINGTON — The town’s animal control officer is warning residents to put their pets on a leash after coyotes attacked two dogs over the weekend.
The dogs, a German shepherd and a boxer, were injured in separate incidents Sunday in the Johnnycake Mountain area near the Harwinton line, Animal Control Officer Katie Meskun said. Both pets had superficial bite wounds to their back legs, she said.
“They are both doing well, they were both seen by their veterinarians,” she said. “Luckily, they are up-to-date on their rabies vaccines.”
In both cases, the dogs had been let outside around dusk, Meskun said. One owner reported hearing the coyote attack and the other saw coyotes before they fled.
Meskun said she encourages people to look around before letting their dogs go outside. They should then put them on a leash and go out with them, she said.
She said she saw a social media post about another coyote sighting in town Monday night. More reports of coyote — and bear — sightings came in before the attacks, although bear sightings dropped off as the weather cooled.
She can only hope the same thing happens with coyotes.
“We hope the pack moves,” she said.
