Coyote attack just west of Owen Sound leaves pet dead – Owen Sound Sun Times

Georgian Bluffs is warning residents to take extra care with their pets outdoors after a fatal coyote attack in the Brooke neighbourhood just west of Owen Sound earlier this week.

Following the attack, residents are being advised to be on the lookout for coyote activity and to take extra care when pets are outdoors.

A township spokesperson said the attack occurred on Wednesday. No additional information is available at this time at the request of the family involved.

The township offered some tips on keeping neighbourhoods safe by preventing wild animal encounters. They included keeping trash covered and any pet food indoors, never feeding wildlife and removing fallen fruit from gardens, always supervising pets when outdoors, following leash laws and keeping pets under care and control at all times.

“If you see a coyote, do not approach it,” it said in a news release from the township. “Stay calm, make yourself look large as you can, and make noise.”

Coyotes are common in the area, but generally avoid human contact, the release added.

If a wild animal is causing an immediate threat to public safety, the public is asked to contact the OPP at 519-794-7827.
