BOSTON (AP) — A California-based finance company has agreed to pay more than $900,000 to settle allegations that it was illegally leasing dogs in Massachusetts, the state attorney general’s office said.
As part of the agreement entered in Suffolk Superior Court on Wednesday, Monterey Financial Services LLC will stop collecting on active leases, cancel about $700,000 in outstanding consumer debt on the leases, and transfer full ownership of the dogs to Massachusetts residents, authorities said.

Thousands of California grocery store workers have approved a new contract with major supermarket chains, avoiding a potential strike. The union on Thursday said members in the central and southern areas of California ratified a tentative deal that was reached last week. It grants some 47,000 employees at 540 stores higher wages, stronger health benefits and other benefits. Workers had voted to authorize a strike if a new contract wasn’t reached. A strike and lockout in 2003 and 2004 put nearly 70,000 Southern California grocery workers on picket lines for more than four months.
The San Jose Sharks will once again not be a part of the NHL’s postseason.

On a day that saw Russia suffer a stinging symbolic defeat with the loss of its Black Sea fleet flagship, Ukraine’s president has hailed his people for their resolve since Russia invaded and for making “the most important decision of their life – to fight.” In his nightly address, Volodymyr Zelenskyy told his compatriots they should be proud of having survived 50 days under attack when Moscow “gave us a maximum of five.” He spoke hours after the Russian guided-missile cruiser Moskva sank after suffering heavy damage in disputed circumstances. Ukraine said it hit the vessel with missiles, while Russia acknowledged a fire on board but no attack.
An Arizona woman who lost a leg to a rare cancer is closing in on what would be a new world record — at least 102 marathons in 102 days. Jacky Hunt-Broersma began her unusual quest in mid-January, covering the classic 26.2-mile marathon distance every day. The South Africa native runs on a special carbon-fiber blade, completing most of her marathons on a loop near her home or indoors on a treadmill. She’ll be running the Boston Marathon on April 18, which will be No. 92 in her streak. Hunt-Broersma says she hopes others realize they’re stronger than they think.
Firefighters battling a deadly wildfire in southern New Mexico took advantage of a brief break in the weather but gusty winds are expected to return Friday. The blaze claimed two lives and charred more than 200 residences. The fire has forced the evacuation of about 5,000 people in the mountain community of Ruidoso. That’s where the remains of a couple were found near a burned home as they tried to flee. Area schools have been closed into next week and about 5,000 residences have been left without power since the wind-driven blaze broke out Tuesday.
Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova is at the frontline of a legal battle to hold Russia accountable for atrocities committed in her country. The bulk of the investigative work – and probably the largest number of prosecutions – will likely be done by Ukraine . Venediktova has already opened over 8,000 criminal investigations related to the war and identified over 500 suspects. For this formidable prosecutor, the work is personal. “I protect the public interest of Ukrainian citizens. And now I see that I can’t protect these dead kids,” she says. “And for me it’s pain.”

Clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, a major holy site in Jerusalem, have wounded at least 59 Palestinians. The Islamic endowment that administers the site said Israeli police entered in force before dawn, as thousands of worshippers were gathered at the mosque for early morning prayers during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Israel said its forces entered to remove rocks and stones that had been gathered in anticipation of violence. The mosque is the third holiest site in Islam. It is built on a hilltop that is the most sacred site for Jews, who refer to it as the Temple Mount. Israeli-Palestinian tensions have soared in recent weeks.
