Like all other pet insurance providers, ASPCA Pet Health Insurance doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions, which it defines as an “illness, disease, injury or change to your pet’s health that first occurs or shows symptoms before coverage is effective or during a waiting period. This includes conditions that are related to, secondary or resultant from a pre-existing condition.”
Any illness, condition or injury that occurs before or during your policy’s 14-day waiting period won’t be covered. For example, if your pet breaks a bone two days after you sign up for your policy, the injury would be considered a pre-existing condition and won’t be eligible for a claim.
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance also excludes a few other services such as boarding, breeding, anal gland expression, cosmetic or elective procedures, funeral services, grooming, organ transplants and herbal medications.

To assess ASPCA Pet Health Insurance’s customer satisfaction, we at the Home Media reviews team read more than 100 customer reviews of the provider on the company’s Trustpilot page. While some customers appreciated the company’s fast claims filing, easy billing, direct deposit options and responsive customer service, others referenced poor experiences with reimbursements that were lower than expected and slow response times.
We reached out to ASPCA Pet Health Insurance for a comment on the negative reviews and received the following comment in response:
“We receive great feedback from customers relating stories about how the ASPCA Pet Health Insurance program has helped them cover the costs to keep their dog or cat healthy. The bond between pet and pet parent is powerful, and we frequently receive very heartfelt, emotional emails and phone calls thanking us. In addition, we’re proud of the Excellent rating we have on Trustpilot.com (4.3 out of 5 stars).
“We make every effort to provide the best customer experience. Regarding coverage, customers choose a deductible and reimbursement percentage when signing up and claims are handled in accordance with the terms and conditions of the policy.* Therefore, depending on those factors and covered conditions, reimbursement will not be the full cost of the invoice. In addition, our teams work very hard to process claims as quickly as possible.”
Here are some ASPCA Pet Health Insurance reviews from Trustpilot:
“We submitted our claim for our two cats on Tuesday, got a response right away and money was in our checking account on Thursday.”
— Jeff F.
“The offering is OK given the cost. Looking at the invoices we’ve received on our dog, the reimbursement is lower than the actual cost, and in the case of the spaying, significantly less. The items we can claim do not seem to cover all the usual conditions applicable to a pup.”
— JB
“Dependable coverage and easy to make a claim! My dog was terribly sick with a sudden tick-borne illness that required many visits between his regular vet and emergency clinic in a 1.5-week time frame. All claims were processed sooner than expected. Glad to have the coverage plan I have.”
— Susan
“This has been a tough sell for me. ASPCA [Pet Health Insurance] has paid out our major claims, but reimbursement has not been fast and I’ve had to have multiple communications with ASPCA [Pet Health Insurance] for each claim, asking for duplicate copies of documents they already have and having the portal say more information [is] needed but [receiving] no indication of what information was needed.”
— Jessica
