In 2019, I went to a pet store in Greenville on the hunt for my best friend. I knew since I was 5 years old that as soon as I had my home, I would adopt a dog. No one tells you how difficult it is to adopt or purchase a dog, but you need to weigh the options either way.
In Eastern North Carolina, there are over 100 rescues and animal shelters, meaning that your best friend is in one of those places right now. I am a firm believer in the statement, “adopt don’t shop.” The main reason is the understanding that when you adopt from a rescue or animal shelter, it means way more than when you purchase from a breeder and I am not just talking about money. I am talking about the endless amounts of dogs already born who need to be loved.
A dog from the shelter comes from a multitude of backgrounds but needs your love way more than you think. Some dogs just lost their previous owner, some of them have spent their whole lives as a stray and some of them have seen the evils of the human race.
When I adopted my Koda, a pit bull mix, she was in a terrible place. She was recovering from a broken back-right leg, a neck scar, and mange. Now she is healthy as a horse and is the most spoiled pup in my world. You learn a lot from adopting, especially if the dog is older than 9 months, but also get the full experience of having a dog.
When you are purchasing from a breeder that number can be anywhere from $250-$2500 just to purchase a dog, however when you adopt from a shelter the price is $160-200, and that includes vaccine, rabies, microchip & spay/neuter.
