The relationship between pet owners and their pets is a special one that has become increasingly meaningful in recent decades, with more people adopting dogs and cats as their preferred pet choice compared to other animals such as fish or birds. While it might seem like pure joy at first glance to be the master of an adorable pooch or kitten, there are various responsibilities that go along with caring for these animals, which require a lot of love and dedication from the owner. A big part of this entails feeding your pets a proper diet, and there are some useful tips that will ensure that the diet you provide for your pet benefits their health.
1. Supplements
Just like with people, you can give your pets supplements to improve their overall health. For example, CBD oil for cats is a great way to improve your kitty’s immunity, heart health, and reduce their stress. It also brings relief from discomforts like arthritis and even cancer pain. Fish oil is rich in fatty acids that are known to promote good heart, brain, and joint health. It’s also filled with antioxidants that can help prevent inflammation and remove toxins from the body. Probiotics are another great option for improving your pets’ digestive health because they contain bacteria that can aid in digestion so your cat or dog won’t feel sluggish or uncomfortable after they eat. Vitamins are another way to ensure that your cat or dog is getting the right nutrients in their diet, and there are various vitamins you can choose from depending on what aspect of health you want to improve. A good example is vitamin E, which is known for its antioxidant properties, or calcium for stronger bones. That said, you should always check with the vet before introducing any new supplement into your pet’s diet, just to be on the safe side.
2. Human Foods That Are Beneficial For Pets
Another way to ensure your pet’s health is by providing them with human foods that are known to be beneficial for them. You can give your dog certain types of vegetables like carrots, chard, and kale, which have high levels of vitamin K that helps keep their bones strong. Salmon is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids that help improve heart health, and pumpkin can help regulate their digestive system. There are also some human foods that you should never give your pets at all, like chocolate, milk, or avocado because these can be toxic for them. However, it’s important to note that unless you’re a nutritionist, it’s best to use human food as an occasional treat rather than base their diet around it, since providing your pet will all the nutrients they need, and creating a well-balanced diet by preparing their meals yourself is not an easy task.
3. Pet Food Quality And Type
Of course, the kind of commercial pet food you decide on will have the biggest impact on your pet’s health, since that’s what their diet will be based on. The two types of commercial pet food are wet and dry (kibble). Kibble is the most popular type both with pet owners and vets, but while some pets seem to respond well to it, there are others who do better on wet food – especially senior pets that have problems with chewing food. When it comes to food quality, the food grade you choose will be determined by your pet’s age, type, and activity levels. As a general rule, you want to go for either premium, super-premium, or veterinary-grade foods. However, the safest way to ensure that the food quality is good is to read the food label found on the back of the bag. The first ingredient should be something like “chicken” or “beef”, not by-products, corn, wheat gluten, soybean meal, etc. The best option is to select foods that use several high-quality meat proteins in the formula, which are easy for your pet to digest. If you’re worried about allergies, it’s important to note that the top allergens for pets are proteins – chicken, in particular, seems to cause issues, so it’s important to take note of how your pet reacts to the different protein sources.
4. Treats
It can be hard to resist giving your pet as many treats as they want, especially when they’re being a good boy or girl. It’s important to keep in mind, though, that overfeeding your pet can cause a lot of health issues, so knowing how and when to give treats, and what kind of treats to choose is crucial. The rule of thumb is to avoid giving them more than 10% of their daily calorie intake in treats. When buying treats, always read the label to ensure that it’s of high quality. In order to avoid any negative health impacts, you should avoid treats that contain artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. The best commercial treats are usually those made with the fewest ingredients, with the highest represented ingredient being meat, and with added vitamins and minerals. Of course, as previously mentioned, you can also give them certain human foods, like small bits of cooked meat, fish, or vegetables.
5. Meal Schedule
Establishing a set time for their meal is an important part of any pet’s diet. How many meals they get during the day is also an important factor. Puppies and kittens should have around 3-5 smaller meals a day up to the first couple of months, after which their meal schedule should be adjusted. At six months old, you should give them 2-3 meals each day, and at around 18 months, you can bring that down to just 1-2 meals. It’s important that you give them food at times when they aren’t particularly active. For example, you should wait at least half an hour to take the dog out for their walk after they’ve eaten. Dogs and cats that are more sedentary will need less food than active ones, so it’s important to take note of your pet’s activity levels, age, metabolism, and breed when creating a meal schedule.
Weighing your pet regularly, and taking note of their behavior, will inform you on whether you need to make any changes to their diet. If your pet is acting mopey or is experiencing weight gain or loss that can’t be explained by other factors – like an increase or decrease in their activity levels, you should make the necessary adjustments to their diet. It’s always a good idea to consult your vet on this, and if your pet starts refusing food, that’s usually a good sign that they might be experiencing a medical issue that needs to be checked out by a professional.
