Exotics department run by only veterinarian in the state with such advanced and progressive training in exotic pet care
The Burlington Emergency & Veterinary Specialists (BEVS) has opened a new department for exotic animals.
“We’ve treated a variety of small mammals over the years, and just like our love for dogs and cats, we know exotic animals are also owned and loved by Vermont families,” expressed Whitney Durivage, MBA, CVPM, BEVS vice president, in a company release.1 “Exotic animals need and deserve the same care we give our other pets, and we are excited to provide this unique service to the community.”
According to the release, the exotics department team offers wellness/preventative care, nutrition, advanced diagnostics, medical management, and orthopedic and soft tissue surgery for:
They do not treat venomous snakes, most medium to large primates, adult ratites (eg, ostriches, emus, rheas), or illegally owned animals. BEVS provides exotic patients access to specialized housing, high-quality digital X-ray, ultrasound, CT, endoscopy, and in-house laboratory and pharmacy.
The department is led by Jordan Adair, DVM, who has a passion for animals, and especially avian and reptile medicine and surgery, as he grew up with many exotic pets. He achieved his veterinary degree at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, then completed a 1-year combined dog/cat and exotics internship before doing a 3-year exotic residency at a large exotic specialty practice in Ohio. He is the only veterinarian in Vermont with such advanced and progressive training in caring for exotic pets.1
Exotic care at BEVS is offered by appointment Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Same-day appointments are often available. No referral is necessary. Pet parents that have an exotic pet with an emergency are advised to call before visiting the BEVS Emergency Department.
