Pedigree Unleashes Virtual Fostering in Decentraland to Find Real Dogs Homes – Yahoo Finance
Pet food maker Pedigree is bringing furry friends to the metaverse in an effort to end real-world pet homelessness, the company said Wednesday.
While most metaverse experiences exist entirely in digital spaces, whether it be November’s Metaverse Music Festival or March’s Metaverse Fashion Week, Pedigree’s activation is focused on creating long-term impact outside of the metaverse.
The FOSTERVERSE activation will allow users to foster virtual dogs on the metaverse platform Decentraland. In order to participate, owners of virtual land in Decentraland can choose any available dog from pet adoption site Adopt a Pet and upload avatars based on their photos to the platform.
Those who don’t own land in Decentraland can still interact with the virtual pets, including chatting with other users to learn more about the real-world dogs, donating to the Pedigree Foundation to help other pets in need or adopting their real-world counterparts.
According to a report from Shelter Animals Count, just over half of dogs in shelters are finding new homes these days. By giving users an opportunity to foster pets in a virtual space, the hope is that they might be more inclined to adopt a dog in real life.
Pedigree will also match up to $100,000 in donations to support the Pedigree Foundation, focusing on helping fund foster programs for shelters around the country.
"Both the Pedigree brand and Pedigree Foundation have long histories of supporting animal shelters and promoting dog adoption, and this program enables people to support deserving dogs in a new way through virtual fostering,” said Jean-Paul Jansen, vice president of marketing for Mars Petcare North America, in a press release.
Beyond fostering a virtual dog, users can also flex FOSTERVERSE wearables on their avatars.
Pedigree isn’t alone in its efforts to use Web3 to raise awareness about pet homelessness. In April, blockchain firm Pawtocol created a crypto-backed pet fund to support shelter animals in being adopted.

STORY: Lockdowns have lifted, and China’s shoppers are out in force again. That’s good news for the luxury brands that depend on Chinese spending. But it might not be quite such good news for the Western retailers who once welcomed droves of high-spending tourists from the country. Because experts say more Chinese are choosing to do their shopping for luxe goodies at home. The resort island of Hainan is luring consumers with duty-free retail. Shoppers at one mall in Sanya city were enjoying the convenience: “When we went shopping at Harrods in the United Kingdom, the prices there were a lot cheaper than those in mainland China and you could claim a tax refund too. But the whole tax refund process is rather complicated, unlike duty-free shopping in Sanya. Whatever we buy here is already tax-free. It’s more convenient.”China is forecast to be the world’s biggest market for luxury goods by 2025. That means makers should now benefit as stores reopen. The question is whether shopping habits have been changed by years of lockdown. Jonathan Yan is a principal at the Roland Berger Consultancy:“A lot of consumers already have the habit to purchase locally for the luxury goods. And also, given the policy of repatriation, a lot of consumption will also happen in Hainan.”China lifted most restrictions for domestic and inbound travellers in early January.Travel site trip.com says overseas flight bookings jumped 200% after the move. But it seems many Chinese will be opting to spend their time, and their money, at home.

Instead of returning the dog to her home, however, Schultz dropped her off near the family’s house, which prompted an overnight search for the dog.On Thursday morning, the sheriff’s office said, detectives located Lady at a home in the Danforth Lakes community, where a resident took care of her for the night.“Schultz was arrested for grand theft,” police added.
