Melrose Gets Grant For Police Dog Healthcare – Melrose, MA Patch
MELROSE, MA — The Melrose Police Department recently got a boost for its K9 police dog program in the form of a grant from the nonprofit Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., police announced last week.
The money goes to Melrose K9 Giselle, funding a medical insurance program to support Giselle’s care.
Vested Interest is an East Taunton-based organization working to provide bullet and stab protective vests as well as other aid for law enforcement dogs across the U.S., as described by Melrose Police.
The “Healthcare for K9 Heroes” grant pays for a medical insurance program covering policy premiums for police dogs.
Melrose is one of roughly four dozen departments receiving money through this year’s round of funding.
Police departments need to have no more than three K9s to qualify for this grant program. Departments also need to have already received a vest through Vested Interest.
The grant-funded insurance policy covers illness, injuries, diagnostic testing and therapies for dogs ages two through seven, according to Melrose Police.
Giselle, a Labrador retriever, graduated from the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Explosive Detection Canine Program last year. She works with area law enforcement agencies to conduct search operations, including searches for explosives.
Giselle received her vest donation from Vested Interest earlier this year.
