There are few things that can make you feel better than a delicious homemade snack, and the same is true for your dog. If you’re looking to switch things up from store-bought goodies, try making your own dog treats—it’s so easy! It’s also a great way to monitor what kind of ingredients your furry friend is ingesting.
The chewy texture of these sweet potato dog treats is a nice change from more traditional crunchy dog biscuits. Sweet potatoes have a lot of benefits for your dog. They’re loaded with vitamin A, which supports their skin and coat, eyes and muscles. The turmeric and coconut oil can also be beneficial for your dog’s health in moderate amounts. Your pup will love these treats, and you’ll love knowing you’re supporting their health.

Peel the sweet potatoes and thinly slice them. You want the slices to be about 1/4 in. or thicker; too thin and they’ll roast into chips rather than chews. You can slice your potatoes into rounds with a sharp knife or use a mandoline for more consistency. Just make sure to wear cut-proof gloves.
In a medium bowl, microwave the coconut oil for 30 seconds or until melted.
Add the potato slices to the bowl of coconut oil. Sprinkle in 1 tablespoon of ground turmeric and mix until all the slices are coated.
Spread the potato slices in a single layer on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Roast in a 200°F oven for 2-3 hours, until the slices have shrunken and become chewy.
Let the slices cool and treat your dog to a few! A word of caution: The turmeric on these will turn your fingers bright yellow, but seeing your dog licking up the leftovers will be well worth it.
If you love making homemade treats, you must try these bacon dog treats.
Leftover sweet potato dog treats will last up to three weeks in the refrigerator. Because of their soft texture, they may get softer over time, but your pup most likely won’t mind.
While a common sweet potato mistake is storing them in the fridge when they’re raw, it’s best to refrigerate cooked potatoes in an air-tight container. This way, the treats won’t dry out too fast.
