“We had just lost the dog we had for 13 years. She had health problems the last two years of her life. When we knew that her end was near, we wanted her to die with dignity. So, I had someone come over, and she died in my arms. It was very emotional to lose her. But I knew we needed another dog to help us recover from the loss of our dog. So, I Googled ‘big dogs that are great with kids.’ And the Great Pyrenees came up. I was familiar enough with Great Pyrenees because I know that they are livestock guard dogs, which is perfect because we own chickens in our backyard.
“The first night after we got Sugar Bear, I had a full-blown panic attack at three (o’clock) in the morning. I was like, ‘Why did I do this? Why did I get another dog?’ I was so panicked about it. I woke Chris up and told him I needed a hug because I was terrified. I couldn’t sleep because it was bad. Like what will I do if she’s big and aggressive? It was terrifying, and I knew it was on me to be responsible for her.
“Sugar Bear is almost a year old now, and she’s silly and cute. She gives me something to laugh about. She is an extrovert, and she makes so many friends when we go out for a walk. I find that having her is very soothing and comforting for me personally. I just feel like there’s a lot in my life that is not soothing and comforting. So, getting Sugar Bear who is just a marshmallow, she very much fills a hole for me.”
