Four-H members, leaders and community members were recognized on Nov. 20 at the annual 4-H Recognition Event held at the Clay County 4-H Center in Vermillion.
The prestigious 4-H Meritorious Service award was presented to Heine Farms and Sydell/John P. and Doralee Lynch for their outstanding dedication and support to the Clay County 4-H Program.
Friend of 4-H awards were presented to Missy O’Connor, Knutson Dentistry, Jenna Girard and Dr. Greg VerHeul for their continuous support to the 4-H Program.
4-H alumni honored at the event was Becca Kruse, Aimee Sorensen, and Erika Fallan for their continued involvement in the Clay County 4-H program.
Julie Fallan, leader of Meckling Livestock 4-H Club, was honored with the Diamond Clover for 20 years of leadership to the club. Margaret Williams, leader of Dog 4-H Club, was honored with the Pearl Clover for 15 years of leadership to the club. Bradley Waage, leader of the Clay County Flyers 4-H Club was awarded the Gold Clover for 10 years of service to the club. Five-year leaders, Nikki Bohnsack and Joshua Skatvold, were given the Silver Clover. Nikki is a co-leader of the Lucky Trailblazers 4-H Club and Josh is a leader of the Clay County Flyers 4-H Club. First year Bronze Clovers were presented to Paul Priester, Matt Green, Kelly Green and Jennifer Law all of the Clay County Flyers 4-H Club, Cathy Nelson of the Jolly JJs 4-H Club, and Amy Schweinle of the Lucky Trailblazers 4-H Club.
Clay County had 7 members graduating out of the 4-H Program this fall. Spencer Skatvold, an 11 year member of the Clay County Flyers 4-H Club; Avrie Shefl, a 7 year member of the Clay County Flyers 4-H Club; Tommy Jennewein, a 6 year member of the Clay County Flyers 4-H Club; Clare Dahlhoff, an 11 year member of Meckling Livestock 4-H Club; Emma Heine, an 11 year member of Meckling Livestock 4-H Club; Emma Orr, a 7 year member of the Pride of Wakonda 4-H Club; and Lacey Mockler, a 10 year member of the Clay County Cubs 4-H Club.
Youth-in-Action awards consist of the Fashion Revue, Public Presentations and Special Foods Contests. They are presented to the member that receives the top score in each contest held in Clay County. Callie Peterson was recipient of the Fashion Revue award in the junior age division. Coralee Taylor was the recipient of the Fashion Revue award in the beginner age division. In the Public Presentation contest Chloe Klunder was the recipient of the Communications award in the junior age division. Morgan Stelling was the recipient of the Communications award in the beginner age division. In the Special Foods contest, Morgan Stelling and Coralee Taylor were awarded the Special Foods award for the beginner division with a tie. These awards are sponsored by Ron Johnson of Centerville.
The 4-H Record Book and 4-H Journal awards are also sponsored by Ron Johnson of Centerville. These awards are given to members that have turned in books that were outstanding based on completeness and neatness. Senior members were Mady Peterson, Emma Bohnsack, Clare Dahlhoff, Mary Dahlhoff, Treyton Law, Cole Heine, and Joel Dahlhoff. In the junior division, Callie Peterson, Mick Lindstrom, Chloe Klunder, Paisleigh Ensminger, Cadee Sorensen, Jerry Thurman, Emmett Knutson, Hadley Nelson. Beginner members that received awards were Olivia Lynch, Faith Kashas, Coralee Taylor, Eleanor Anderson, Ben Bohnsack, Parker Nelson, and Knox Shefl.
The Best Secretary’s Book awards are chosen on neatness and completeness of secretary’s minutes. This award is sponsored by Ron Johnson, Centerville. The 2022 recipient of best Secretary Book award was Chloe Klunder with the Clay County Flyers 4-H Club.
Fab 5 and Terrific 10 awards sponsored by Ron Johnson, Centerville. These awards are based on how active a member was in club, community, and state events throughout the year. The top five in the senior division to receive the award were Riley Skatvold, Emma Bohnsack, Spencer Skatvold, Tori Waage, and Treyton Law. The top 10 recipients for the beginner and junior age division were Chloe Klunder, Coralee Taylor, Callie Peterson, Eleanor Anderson, Elizabeth Sereda, Ben Bohnsack, Morgan Stelling, Brynn Nelson, and Calie Schultz.
Newly added this year was the 10 Exhibit Challenge these awards are sponsored by the Clay County Fair Board and was a challenge to encourage 4-Hers to bring more exhibits to the fair in many different project areas. This year’s 10 Exhibit Challenge recipients were: Kolt Carter, Paisley Carter, Chloe Klunder, Morgan Stelling, Elizabeth Sereda, and Coralee Taylor.
Best of Show awards are presented to the members who had the best statics exhibits at the county fair in their respective divisions. The 2022 Best of Show recipients were, Emma Bohnsack-Agriculture, Chloe Klunder- Selected Clothing and Textiles; Callie Peterson- Constructed Clothing and Textiles, and Horticulture; Emma Heine- Educational Display, and Visual Arts; Mady Peterson- Food Preservation; Colton Searcy- Foods and Nutrition; Lynlie Shefl – Home Environment; Grady Likness – Personal Development; Faith Kashas- Photography; Elizabeth Sereda – STEM; Katelyn Proefrock- Visual Arts.
Fruit Sales are held every year in February our top 3 fruit salesman this year were Andrea Miller in first, Paisley & Kolt Carter in second place and Emma Heine in third place.
Glenwood Township sponsors the High Point Judging School awards. These awards are presented to the 4-H member with the highest judging school score. In the Consumer Decision Making contest, Parker Nelson was the beginner recipient, Jerry Thurman was the junior division recipient, and in the senior division award was presented to Clare Dahlhoff. In the Horticulture Judging contest, Finley Oelmann was the beginner recipient. Callie Peterson was the junior division recipient, and in the senior division was Shaelynn Puckett. Newly added this year was a horse judging division, Evie Benson was the beginner recipient, Paisleigh Ensminger the junior recipient and Emma Bohnsack the senior recipient.
The Helping Hands award is presented to two members who have shown growth over the 4-H year. Recipients were Andrea Miller and Lucas Green. This award is sponsored by the families of Marshall Lundquist and Clifford and Janice Miller.
Molly’s Award is sponsored by Randy, Lisa and Shelby Jensen, Wakonda. Molly’s Award is in memory of Shelby’s cocker spaniel, Molly. It is presented to a dog club member who displays a willingness to learn and work with their dog and show enthusiasm for the dog project. Marissa Schweinle and her Pitbull Terrier, Max was the 2022 recipient of this award.
Margaret Williams and Frank Schieber sponsor the Joe Millette Award. This award is given to a member who has shown outstanding horsemanship over the year. Paisleigh Ensminger was presented with this award.
The Lucky Trailblazers 4-H Club sponsors the Horse Sweepstakes. Emma Bohnsack, Paisleigh Ensminger, and Ben Bohnsack received belt buckles for having the highest number of points in the senior, junior and beginner age divisions respectively.
The Agriculture, Home Economics and Personal Development Sweepstakes are sponsored by the Clay County Youth Trust Fund. In the Agriculture division, Treyton Law, was presented the senior award. Callie Peterson was presented in the junior award and Coralee Taylor was presented the beginner award. In Personal Development, Elizabeth Sereda, was presented the beginner award, and Chloe Klunder was presented the junior award. For the Family and Consumer Science awards, Eleanor Anderson was the beginner recipient and Callie Peterson was the junior recipient.
The Clay County Flyers 4-H Club sponsors the Shooting Sports Sweepstakes. The junior award was presented to Chloe Klunder and the Senior Award was presented to Treyton Law.
Clay County Abstract and Title Company sponsors the Top Shot Shooting Sports awards. In the beginner division, recipients were: BB Gun – Colton Searcy, Compound bow w/o sight – Colton Searcy, Compound bow w/sight and release – Addison Green, Compound bow w/o sight and release – Kyler Jansen, Shotgun – Addison Green. Junior division: BB Gun – Adalynn Trowbridge, Compound bow w/o sight – Knox Shefl, Compound bow w sight and release – Lucas Green, Shotgun – Lucas Green. Senior division recipients were BB Gun – Avrie Shefl, Compound bow with sight and release – Avrie Shefl, Shotgun – Treyton Law
The New Member Recruitment award is an incentive to have new members join the 4-H program. This year’s first place recipient of the new member recruitment was the Clay County Flyers 4-H Club and in second place was the Burbank Feeders 4-H Club.
The Round Robin award is in memory of Cal Hawley and is sponsored by the Meckling Livestock 4-H Club. The 2022 recipient is Emma Heine.
The Rate of Gain Contest is sponsored by Ron Johnson for three different livestock species. In the Beef division, Riley Skatvold won first place and Spencer Skatvold was second place. Spencer Skatvold was first in the Sheep division and Riley Skatvold was second place. Emma Heine was first place in the Swine division with Treyton Law placing second.
The Clay County Herdsmanship awards are sponsored by Oak Hill Farm. In the Beef barn, this year’s recipient is the Meckling Livestock 4-H Club, for the Sheep, the recipient is the Pride of Wakonda 4-H Club, in the swine barn, Meckling Livestock 4-H Club was the recipient. For the goat division Lucky Trailblazers 4-H Club was presented the award. Newly added this year were divisions for rabbit and poultry, both awards were presented to the Clay County Flyers 4-H Club.
Some State Awards that were presented at recognition event include Elanor Anderson, 1st Place Overall Horticulture Skill-a-thon SD State Fair. Coralee Taylor 5th Place fashion revue SD State Fair. Coralee was also the fifth overall beginner in the consumer decision making skill-a-thon. Andrea Miller was presented an award for her fifth overall market lamb at the SD State Fair. Trey Law and his Dog Alex were recipients of the 2022 Sr Rally Campion at the SD State Dog Show and Emmett Knutson and his dog Nash were the Junior Rally winner at the SD State Dog Show.
