Pupper West Side: Nash Is A Senior Rescue With a Passion for Food, Racing, and Volunteerism – westsiderag.com

How d’ya do? My name’s Nash and I’m a long-haired senior dachshund rescue. My age is a bit of a head scratcher since I’m adopted, so my parents and veterinarian think I could be anywhere between 13 and 17 years old. My parents adopted me from Doxie Rescue of Bucks County & NJ in 2019. They do wonderful work!
What’s for certain is that I’m equal parts gentleman and scamp. Back at the rescue, I was known for stealing other pups’ beds. Heh. Lest you be fooled by my grey hair and two teeth, I’ve still got lots of rambunctious energy, especially around mealtime.
If you ask me, the secret to a long and healthy life is watching the sunrise each morning. I’ll wake up around 5am and start shuffling around before my parents are awake. As breakfast time gets closer, I’ll get a big burst of energy and zoom around the apartment. Our apartment has a couple of stairs leading down into the living room which were posing a hurdle for me at my age, so my parents thoughtfully installed a doggy ramp to allow me to dash between rooms without a problem.
After breakfast, I’ll settle in for a cozy nap. When my parents return from the office, we’ll decompress together by snuggling up on the couch to watch TV for a bit, but as dinnertime nears, I’ll get another burst of zoomies energy and it’s OFF! I! GOOooOOooo!!! Speaking of delicious food, I’m really looking forward to Thanksgiving next week, because in addition to my usual food, I’ve been promised some scraps of turkey. I plan to enjoy it while laying on the couch and watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Such fun!
On the weekends, my parents and I may head outside the city for trips to the Catskills or to tour breweries in Brooklyn and Long Island. Last June, we journeyed all the way to New Jersey where I competed in the Weiner Dog Derby at Meadowlands Racetrack. Despite countless days, weeks, months of intense training, I may have gotten a bit confused when they called “Ready, Set, GO!” and wandered sideways off the race course…But I think that still counts as a win, don’t you agree? You can judge for yourself by watching the race footage here. Undoubtedly, I merited an award for most heartwarming performance.
In Upper West Side news, I’m delighted to announce that I’m serving as the mascot and coordinator for the newly created West 95th Street Block Association. So far, I’ve been helping to host some “Coffee on the Curb” events to meet my neighbors and sign up anyone who is interested in volunteering. The block association is focused on issues that affect and benefit everyone including block beautification, safety, and community building. Next month we’ll be holding a holiday party at Rancho Tequileria on the corner of Amsterdam Avenue and W. 95th. Are you interesting in learning more? If so, please email us at [email protected]
