2 emaciated dogs found at Buena Vista Lagoon die; Humane Society says the dog – The San Diego Union-Tribune
Authorities on Tuesday offered a $1,000 reward for information about two emaciated dogs that died after being found at Buena Vista Lagoon in Oceanside last week.
The San Diego Humane Society’s law enforcement team believes the dogs — a male and female Shepherd mix, both about a year old — were abandoned, officials said.
A city public works employee found the two dogs near Jefferson Street and Lagoon View Drive on the northeastern end of the lagoon Oct 18. The dogs were huddled underneath shrubs, near a “soft,” 4-foot by 4 foot shipping container, officials said. The container looks like a box made of some kind of mesh-like material, with several handles, according to photos released by the Humane Society.
Humane Society officers rushed the animals to the agency’s Oceanside campus, where the female dog died as an officer carried her inside. The other dog was “suffering so much that the medical team had no choice but to immediately perform humane euthanasia,” the Humane Society said a statement.
“These dogs were without proper nutrition for a very long time to reach such an emaciated state,” said Bill Ganley, chief of San Diego Humane Society’s Humane Law Enforcement team, in a statement.
Officials said officers found feces inside the shipping container, leading them to believe the dogs were abandoned inside.
Crime Stoppers put up the reward for any information that leads to an arrest. Tipsters were asked to call (888) 580-8477 or visit the Crime Stoppers website at sdcrimestoppers.org.
