In true Halloween fashion, Pokemon gave us a new spooky yet cute dog Pokemon.
On Tuesday morning, the Pokemon YouTube channel released a new trailer showing a student in the Naranja Academy’s ghost-type Pokemon club searching for ghost-type Pokemon at night. First, a Mimikyu and a Gengar jumpscared the trainer, but the trailer hits its climax when the trainer encounters a peculiar-looking candle sticking out of the ground.
When the trainer approaches the candle a Pokemon emerges from the ground. Greavard, the ghost dog Pokemon, is revealed. Greavard is a pure ghost-type Pokemon. As of now we do not know whether Greavard will evolve, but with reference to other dog Pokemon it is likely that Greavard will be getting an evolution. Greavard has the pickup ability. Pokemon with the ability might pick up the item of an opposing Pokemon or pick up items outside of battle.
Greavard is a small dog Pokemon with long gray fur, a gigantic head, and a candle sitting atop its head. Greavard is likely based on various long-haired dog breeds such as the Catalan Sheepdog and the Briard.
Greavard’s name could be based on the word grievance or possibly grieves, which are residue from melted animal fat used in some dog foods. The latter half of its name could be a reference to a graveyard since Greavards bury themselves underground just like undead zombies in a graveyard. Its name could also come from one of the long-haired dogs it’s based on, the Briard.
Greavard have a tendency to bury themselves underground and rise up like a zombie would, fitting of a ghost-type. Whenever Greavard are buried underground, the candle atop their head sits above the surface giving a faint glow. Greavard also seems to have another ghostly trait. In the trailer, the longer the trainer played fetch with Greavard, the more tiresome they became to the point where they nearly passed out. The trainer described playing with Greavard as it “really sucks the life out of you.” This could be a nod to Greavard’s pokedex entry or could be some signature ability or move that Pokemon is not revealing to us yet.
Greavard will be available in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, which come out on Nov. 18.
