A woman was cited for having violated a municipal ordinance after her pit bull on Sunday attacked and injured her neighbors — an 82-year-old man and a 78-year-old woman — in the Ravenwood area in the southwestern part of the city, police said.
And the responding police officer was bit in one of her thighs and she responded by twice firing her service weapon, striking the dog, police spokesman Cpl. Ricky Jackson said Sunday night in a news release.
The officer responded after police received reports of a bite by an animal having occurred in the 600 block of Nelson Street and the pit bull was found to be attacking Bobby Joyner and Annie Joyner, Jackson said.
After the officer shot the dog, the dog’s owner, Julie Proctor, 62, secured the dog until municipal animal control officers arrived to take custody of the dog, Jackson said.
Bobby Joyner and Annie Joyner were transported to ECU Health Medical Center with severe but non-life-threatening injuries and the police officer was treated and released from Nash UNC Health Care, Jackson said.
An investigation concluded that the dog had been running loose when Bobby Joyner and Annie Joyner were attacked, Jackson said.
Proctor was cited because she, as an owner of a domesticated animal, had illegally allowed the animal to be at large within the city limits, Jackson said.
The incident occurred at noon, Jackson told the Telegram.
