New Restaurants + Arrest Following Dog Discovered With Stab Wound – patch.com

Here are the top stories today in Pittsburgh:
1. New eateries have opened in the Pittsburgh area that you should know about. First up: Alihan’s Coffee and Breakfast. Alihan and Martina Hanoglu opened their fourth restaurant three weeks ago on Sixth Street. For their latest endeavor, the couple is diving into Pittsburgh’s underserved breakfast market, where there are few international breakfast options. Hanoglu says the restaurant is also reflective of her family’s culinary heritage. Hanoglu says that a Turkish breakfast typically includes an array of dishes, including cheese and vegetable platters, eggs, sausage, bread and honey, and it’s all meant to be shared. The restaurant offers a “Turkish breakfast for two” with many of the country’s signature breakfast dishes, all of which can be ordered individually. Next: The Hungry Cowgirl. A local chef and caterer came up with an idea — a delivery-only restaurant — that would tap into the ever-expanding market for food at your doorstep, but find a better way to do it. Focusing on Tex-Mex cuisine, their menu includes items such as The Hungry Cowgirl Bowl (brown rice, slow-roasted chicken, barbacoa beef, romaine, pico de gallo, black beans, salsa and guacamole) and a vegan bowl with tofu tinga plus toppings. In addition, there are fajita kits, nacho kits and Frito pies, aka Walking Tacos, plus various sides. Finally, we’ve got Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams in Bakery Square. A grand opening celebration is scheduled for Oct. 20, and there will be free scoops.

2) A woman was taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition after being found shot in Pittsburgh’s Homewood South neighborhood. The incident happened a little after 4:15 p.m. yesterday in the area of Brushton Avenue and Frankstown Avenue. Pittsburgh Public Safety reports that the woman was found inside a parked car with a gunshot wound to the side. Police described her as being in her early 20s. No arrests have been announced, and an investigation is ongoing.

3) Pittsburgh police arrested a man after discovering a dog suffering from a stab wound Saturday evening. Around 4 p.m., police responded to an apartment complex on the 200 block of Reifert Street after blood was discovered in a hallway of the building. A male suspect, later identified as Trendon Mobely, 38, of Knoxville, with a dog that had a laceration to its neck was discovered at a nearby McDonald’s, police said. Animal Care and Control retrieved the dog and took it for emergency veterinary care. Mr. Mobley confirmed that he lived at the Reifert Street address and admitted that he swung a knife at the dog because it bit him. However, police noted in the criminal complaint that there is no indication that Mr. Mobley was bitten by the dog. He is currently facing one felony charge of aggravated cruelty to an animal and one misdemeanor charge of false identification to law enforcement authorities.

4) The 14th Annual Toto Thon fundraiser took place Friday night. The name of the event comes from the organization Parents in Toto, a non-profit that runs a community center. It provides resources, social programs, and educational events for those with autism. This year, the group raised nearly $32,000 to keep providing those services to the community at no cost to those who need them. “We believe that social-based support is the best way to help build a community,” said Allison Broaddrick, the interim executive director. “We want to go back to the days when we have a neighborhood that supports each other and is there in times of need.” The group is based in Zelienople but provides support for individuals and families throughout southwestern Pennsylvania.

5) Pittsburgh Police are updating the public about the finding of a missing 12-year-old, Jaliana Montgomery. According to police, she went missing on Friday in the area of Woods Run near Highview Cemetery. Police described her as 5’2″, 105 pounds with red curly hair. Anyone with information was asked to call police at 412-323-7141. “Jaliana Montgomery has been safely located. Thank you to the media and the public for sharing the information,” a police spokesperson said.
