MADISON, Wis. — Sometimes, life gets a little ruff. But even those days can end paw-sitively, thanks to hometown heroes such as the City of Madison Fire Department.
On Thursday, just before noon, firefighters responded to a call from a family on Captains Court. Their beloved 16-year-old rat terrier fell down a construction hole and was stuck.
The dog, firefighters reported, was conscious and alert, but due to the narrow width of the utility construction excavation hole, couldn’t get out, and the family couldn’t get in. The dog was about four to five feet underground when the crew arrived on scene.
At first, firefighters tried to lower a ladder into the hole and encourage the dog to climb out. When that did not work, a firefighter attempted to go into the construction hole head-first. Not only was the opening too small, but the dog became distraught, forcing the the Ladder Co. 2 crew to pivot.
Ultimately, the firefighters turned a strap, called “firefighter webbing,” into a makeshift collar. The crew lowered it down and wrapped it around the dog. The firefighters said they were able to then lift the dog out of the hole and immediately reunited it with its family.
The family assessed the dog for injuries, and the rat terrier was given a clean bill of health.
The Ladder Co. 2 crew took extra time to cover the hole with plywood, adding traffic cones to its perimeter to prevent anyone else from falling in. With that precaution in place, dogs on Captains Court can have paw-some games of fetch while construction continues.
